WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, just days after Trump’s highly anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The meeting comes as Trump positions himself as a key broker in efforts to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which has now stretched into its fourth year.
Trump Calls for Peace Agreement, Not Just a Ceasefire
Speaking from Air Force One after his face-to-face meeting with Putin, Trump told reporters and European leaders that the only viable path forward was a full Peace Agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire.
“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up,” Trump posted on Truth Social Saturday.
Trump added that if his talks with Zelensky go well on Monday, he would then look to schedule a follow-up meeting with Putin to move negotiations forward.
Zelensky Signals Support for Trilateral Talks
On social platform X, Zelensky confirmed his readiness to meet Trump and welcomed the possibility of a trilateral discussion involving all three leaders.
“President Trump informed about his meeting with the Russian leader and the main points of their discussion. It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation,” Zelensky wrote.
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,” he added.
What Happened at the Trump–Putin Alaska Summit?
Trump’s Friday meeting with Putin in Alaska marked their first direct encounter since Trump’s first term in office. While Trump described the talks as “progress,” no ceasefire agreement was reached.
He emphasized that Ukraine must be part of any final settlement, particularly on issues of territorial control. The White House has not released specifics of what the two leaders discussed.
Why This Meeting Matters
Monday’s meeting will be Zelensky’s first visit to Washington since early 2025, when tensions flared during a heated Oval Office exchange with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance over U.S. military aid.
Now, with Trump signaling both frustration with Putin’s attacks on Ukrainian cities and openness to a peace framework, all eyes are on whether this new round of diplomacy can bring the war closer to an end.
