PROVIDENCE, RI – A devastating mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday afternoon has left the campus and the surrounding Providence community in profound sorrow. At least two students were killed and nine others were wounded when gunfire erupted inside a classroom in the Barus and Holley engineering building around 4 p.m.

Authorities, including the Providence Police Department, Rhode Island State Police, FBI Boston, and the ATF, have launched a massive manhunt for the lone male suspect.

The Search for the Suspect

The alleged gunman is described as a male wearing all black. Officials confirmed late Saturday that they have imagery of the Brown University shooting suspect and released surveillance footage showing a person matching the description leaving the building on foot.

URGENT INFORMATION: Deputy Chief Tim O’Hara of the Providence Police confirmed authorities are actively pursuing leads. The search remains the top priority as the entire Brown campus remains under a shelter-in-place order until the situation is resolved.

A Day of “Tremendous Sorrow”

Brown University President Christina Paxson issued a heartbroken statement early Sunday morning confirming the victims were all students.

“We lost two students to today’s devastating gun violence. Our hearts go out to them,” President Paxson wrote. “This is a day of tremendous sorrow. No parent or family member should ever have to endure a day like this.”

Victim Update:

  • Fatalities: 2 students killed.

  • Wounded: 9 students transported to local hospitals.

  • Condition: Six remain in critical but stable condition, one in critical condition, one in stable condition, and one student has already been released.

The timing of the shooting, during ongoing final exams (scheduled from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.), has added to the chaos, with outer doors unlocked to accommodate students.

Federal and State Response

The local law enforcement effort involves more than 400 officers. FBI Boston Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau is providing “all capabilities necessary,” including tactical support, evidence response, investigative assistance, and victim services.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee reacted to the violence, stating simply: “The unthinkable has happened.”

In light of the crisis, final exams scheduled for Sunday have been canceled.

Note: This is a rapidly developing situation. Readers are advised to follow official updates from the Providence Police Department and Brown University for the latest safety information.

  1. What would really help here are more thoughts and prayers. That will fix things.

    1. What WOULD help is a good guy with a gun

    2. No, let’s give it more press and try to figure out motives. Then let’s go into the life of the perp so we can encourage more folks who want their 15 minutes of fame.
