WYCKOFF, NJ – Wyckoff Police are issuing an urgent reminder to residents about vehicle security after a shocking incident earlier this month. A resident’s unlocked car with the keys left inside was stolen from a driveway and subsequently used by criminals in a separate burglary out of town, highlighting the critical risk of complacency.

The double incident, which occurred on the same morning, serves as a stark warning about the rising trend of “key fob thefts” where easy access makes vehicles prime targets for organized crime.

The Sequence of Events: From Wyckoff to Kearny

The sequence of events began overnight on Tuesday, December 3rd:

  • 1:38 A.M. | Vehicle Theft (Clinton Avenue): A resident reported their black Kia was stolen from their driveway. Surveillance footage confirmed two individuals entered the vehicle and drove away. Police noted the critical detail: the car was unlocked with the keys inside.

  • The Getaway Car: The stolen Kia was later linked to a burglary in Kearny, NJ. Kearny Police spotted the vehicle and initiated a pursuit, but the chase had to be terminated due to safety concerns.

  • Recovery: The stolen vehicle was ultimately recovered the next day, December 4th, in Irvington.

A Second Target: Unlocked Porsche Rummaged

The criminals were not limited to one street. Also on December 3rd, police received a second report from a resident on Carlton Road whose Porsche was targeted overnight.

  • 1:20 A.M. | Attempted Burglary (Carlton Road): Video surveillance showed two people entering the driveway, quickly opening the unlocked car, and rummaging through the interior.

  • No Reported Loss: The homeowner informed police that they did not believe anything was stolen, but the incident confirms that criminals were actively targeting unsecured vehicles in the area.

Police Urge Vigilance: Lock It Up!

Wyckoff Police are reiterating that residents must eliminate easy opportunities for thieves by practicing basic security habits:

  • NEVER Leave Keys Inside: Key fobs and spare keys should always be removed from the vehicle and secured inside your home.

  • ALWAYS Lock Doors: Even when parked in a private driveway, vehicles should be locked.

  • Report Suspicious Activity: Be the eyes and ears of the community.

“We encourage all residents to report any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity occurring at any time to the Wyckoff Police-County Communications Center at 201-891-2121, or 911 in the event of an emergency.”

    1. The insurance company should refuse to pay due to intentional negligence.

Why do we still keep giving these a$$holes sympathy and compensation when this is publicized on a daily basis?

  2. found in irvington? Ummm not the irish area of NJ

    1. “found in irvington? Ummm not the irish area of NJ”

Maybe they meant the Irvington section of Oslo?

You know how those Norwegians are…………………..

  3. That’s the easiest car to break into Kia, Hyundai, Mazda, those cars are a choke

  4. Ask former Chief Fox what happens when you give your direct reports instructions on what to look for as far as preventing these types of crimes………………………….

    1. its unfortunate that the media buries the facts on criminals
when a small percentage of the population commits 70+ percent of the crimes, the facts speak. Unfortunately we aren’t allow to say it or be called a racist

  5. The person who put the post saying that the insurance shouldn’t pay because they left the keys in the car, OK so if I don’t lock my door on my house and someone comes and breaks into it and steals a few things in my house the insurance shouldn’t pay. Because I don’t lock my door. How about not touching private property? That’s why you’re pay insurance stupid, I don’t give a shit if you have the best locks the best alarm system if they’re going to break into it or steal something, they’re gonna do it that just slows them down a bit that’s about it.
