the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Hackensack, NJ – An urgent Code Blue Alert has been activated for all of Bergen County, effective from midnight tonight, Friday, November 28th, through Sunday, November 30th, at 9:00 AM.
This essential measure is triggered whenever extreme cold poses a direct threat to the unsheltered population, reminding residents that resources are available to keep vulnerable individuals safe during dangerously low temperatures.
Extreme Cold Conditions Expected
The Code Blue declaration follows criteria established by the National Weather Service, which indicate severe cold is imminent for North Jersey:
-
Temperature Threshold: The outside temperature is expected to reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
-
Windchill Factor: Or, the windchill temperature is forecast to drop to zero degrees Fahrenheit or less for a sustained period of two hours or more.
These conditions significantly increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed to the elements.
How to Access Help or Report Unsheltered Individuals
If you are currently unsheltered, or if you know of an individual who is homeless and needs assistance accessing a warming center during this Code Blue period, please act immediately.
