Ridgewood NJ,Village Council Candidate Siobhan Winograd spearheaded a group called “One Village One Vote” ,which promoted the idea that eliminating the school budget vote would somehow increase voter turn out , yes you read that right , voting less would somehow increase voter turn out . The group also claimed that eliminating the school budget vote would also increase voter participation and  increase transparency, not voting would increase transparency.

Ridgewood had always been a town that took its schools and public education very seriously so no one in their right mind would think residents of Ridgewood would give up the school budget vote , yet the Winograd  group conned residents with the help of the “League of Women Voters”  ,which was founded as the successor to the National American Woman Suffrage Association, which had led the nationwide fight for women’s suffrage, local developers and of coarse the teachers union . Giving up the school budget vote was one more step in diminishing Ridgewood from a great town to a more ordinary town  .

Now Village Council Candidate Siobhan Winograd who took away your vote wants your vote Village Council . Perhaps you should give her your vote for the school budget, oh that’s right you no longer have one.

  1. More people vote in November than in the spring. Settled Science.

    1. The science states that you can’t vote for the school budget in Nov. They eliminated that opportunity completely. That is voter suppression…think about this when u go to vote on 11/8.

And to think the LWV mission is to protect voter rights.

    2. If the school election isn’t subject to a vote in November, then you lost your right to vote. Settled science . . . you don’t get to vote on the school budget in November genius under almost all conditions.

      FACTS MATTER (read: don’t buy Winograd’s lies) . . . .

School board elections held in April allowed for voter input on the school budget.. Election in November do NOT allow for a direct vote on the budget unless. the school tax levy is greater then 2% annually. The 2% cap is not a cap on the entire budget increase and highly unlikely to ever trigger a budget vote. High cost expenses are not included in the 2% cap. Also, budget increases below 2% can be “banked” and added to a future budget.

While Board of Education elections were held in November, the school budget increase for the 2018-2019 school year was 3.62% and did not trigger a vote. The additional 1.62% equaled $1.5 million from the taxpayers not needed to cover education costs.

The concept that moving the vote saves $$ is absurd. You save pennies on the dollar on election costs when compared to costs saved by carefully reducing costs or cutting the fat our of the school budget if it does not pass in April.

And, finally, Ridgewood local election turnout is higher in the spring than in November, demonstrated by data available from the Bergen County Clerk.

The November local elections experiment in Ridgewood has already failed. Turnout for Board of Education elections held in November from 2014 -2018 spanned from 12.5% (one of our lowest turnouts in the past several years) to 35.5%, an overall average of 24%. During that time, typically hotly contested Board of Education seats went uncontested for four out of those five elections. People stopped paying attention once the local elections were held simultaneously with national, state, and county issues.

Data for Ridgewood local elections held in the spring demonstrates that when voters have the opportunity to focus specifically on our local issues, turnout is higher. This year’s May election had a 29% turnout, higher than the entire November 2019 general election turnout of 22%. Average turnout for Ridgewood local elections is about 2% higher in the spring than in November.

  2. I don’t like her one bit, but if she yields so much power that she “took’ away our “rights to vote” then she seems pretty powerful. By the way, I don’t think it was her who did this, it was the voters. If the voters are gullible then it is not her fault. She is just as saleswoman. She said it during the debate that she work for a sustainable children clothing company. She sold the idea and reached her goal. Simple as that. Those who will vote for her have made up their mind already. I bet majority of parents have no idea what the school budget is all about and don’t give a damn. Especially the newcomers who are a significant portion.

They also probably don’t know WHAT their children are FORCED to be taught, and won’t care until it hits them in the face.

  3. Exactly what is her relationship with former Ridgewood mayor Ramon Hache? They seem to be inseparable when attending the same official events. Were they a couple in Ridgewood High School?

    1. You can’t just “speculate “ and throw it out there in a public forum. There is a lot of that going around on social media. Since this is a moderated blog the moderator should remove that post.

  4. The few times that the budget was voted down in the past, very little was removed from it. It was almost like a waste of the effort to vote it down if larger chunks were not removed.
