Ridgewood NJ, in 2018 New Jersey became the No. 1 state to move away from , according to new data from moving and relocation company United Vans Lines.

The top reason why residents left was for a professional opportunity, the United Vans Lines data shows. Of all the residents who moved out, 46 percent listed “job” as the deciding factor.“A leading motivation behind these migration patterns across all regions,” in fact, “is a career change,” the report says. About “one out of every two people who moved in the past year moved for a new job or company transfer.”

The second most compelling reason to relocate, according to the respondents, was retirement, as 24 percent said they preferred to spend their golden years elsewhere. A similar share, 22 percent, said they wanted to be closer to family, while 17 percent listed “lifestyle change” as their reason for moving and 5 percent said “health.”

Twice as many people moved out of New Jersey in 2018 as moved in. The migration, the largest of any state, has dropped the Garden State’s population to pre-2013 levels.

Oddly New Jersey is the 2019’s 5th Happiest State in America  in a new  WalletHub Study.

While the WalletHub results seem somewhat unbelievable they do offer some interesting facts as food for thought and might suggest that even those happy with New Jersey will still move out.

With the U.S. ranking No. 19 on this year’s World Happiness Report, down one spot since the previous edition, and research showing that money up to a certain dollar amount can contribute to happiness, the personal-finance website today released its report on 2019’s Happiest States in America as well as accompanying videos.

To determine where Americans have the highest satisfaction with life, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 31 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from emotional health to income level to sports participation rate.
