WALLINGTON, NJ – Seton Hall University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has received a transformative $10 million donation from Bergen County natives and alumni Thomas and Sylvia Tencza, marking the largest gift in the program’s history.
The donation will fund the department’s first endowed professorship in chemistry and support research priorities within the university’s PhD program.
Honoring Alumni Legacy
Thomas Tencza, a 1964 Seton Hall graduate who later earned his PhD in chemistry in 1966, credited the university for his success in science. He went on to build a distinguished career at Bristol Myers Squibb in Hillside, where he contributed to the development of critical medications treating a wide range of diseases.
Before her passing in September 2024, Sylvia Tencza established the program in honor of her late husband, who died in 2012.
Strengthening Research & Education
“This extraordinary gift will ensure that Seton Hall’s chemistry and biochemistry programs continue to thrive, particularly the Ph.D. program, where grant-funded research and publication are key to student success,” said Jonathan Farina, dean of Seton Hall’s College of Arts and Sciences.
University President Msgr. Joseph Reilly added, “Tom and Sylvia’s generosity will enrich the student experience and further strengthen the academic excellence for which Seton Hall has always been known.”

The Tencza family’s donation will not only advance faculty research but also expand opportunities for graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in chemistry.
