Why Communities Are Saying “No” to Synthetic Turf

Washington state , When we send our kids out to play, we expect the field to be a place of growth, health, and safety. However, a growing according to the group “Safer Field for All ” in  Washington state , local communities are sounding the alarm on a hidden danger right beneath our athletes’ feet: synthetic turf.

While it might look evergreen, the reality of artificial grass is far more complex—and potentially hazardous—than many realize. Here is why advocates are pushing to choose real grass for the sake of our youth and the environment.

1. The “Heat Island” on the Sidelines

Synthetic turf isn’t just plastic; it’s a heat magnet. On a warm day, artificial fields can reach temperatures 40 to 70 degrees higher than natural grass.

  • The Risk: These extreme temperatures increase the risk of heat exhaustion and skin burns, turning a fun afternoon into a medical emergency.

  • The Contrast: Natural turfgrass actually cools the air around it through transpiration, acting as a natural air conditioner for players.

2. Physical Toll: 16% More Injuries

The data is in, and it’s coming from the highest levels of play. A study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine analyzed NFL data between 2012 and 2016, revealing a startling statistic: Elite athletes suffered 16% more lower-body injuries on synthetic turf than on natural grass.

The Impact: Researchers estimated that if those games had been played on real grass, 319 lower-body injuries could have been avoided. If the pros are struggling with the lack of “give” in artificial surfaces, our youth athletes are even more vulnerable.

3. Environmental and Chemical Concerns

Synthetic turf is essentially a massive installation of plastic. Over time, this leads to:

  • Microplastic Pollution: Small plastic fibers break off and enter our local waterways and soil.

  • Chemical Exposure: Many turf systems contain hazardous chemicals and “forever chemicals” (PFAS) that can be ingested or absorbed through skin contact.

  • Health Links: Deeply concerned citizens and health experts have raised flags regarding long-term exposure to these materials, linking them to detrimental health effects, including cancer.

Real Grass: The Natural Advantage

Choosing natural turfgrass isn’t just about avoiding the “bad”—it’s about embracing the “good.” Research shows that interaction with real nature provides:

  • Mental Health Boosts: Lowered blood pressure, reduced stress, and increased happiness.

  • Physical Safety: Better shock absorption for joints and muscles.

  • Environmental Justice: Natural grass filters rainwater and sequesters carbon, supporting a healthier ecosystem for future generations.

How You Can Help

As members of the Washington community, your voice matters. We encourage you to reconsider supporting the installation of synthetic turf in your local parks and schools. For the safety of our families and the health of our planet, it’s time to return to the roots of the game.

Choose real grass. Say NO to synthetic turf.

  1. Ironic, and MSC fired a 20 year veteran coach for fighting to protect our children from synthetic pollution.

  2. NFL reports injury rates are similar on turf and natural grass

  3. I can’t believe we are still debating this.
