Leonia NJ, This evening, the Bergen County community gathered at the 9/11 Monument in Overpeck County Park to hold a solemn remembrance ceremony. Twenty-four years after the tragic attacks, the event honored the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including 147 cherished residents of Bergen County.

A Personal Reflection on a Day of Tragedy and Bravery

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, a former volunteer firefighter who responded to the attacks, shared a deeply personal message. He reflected on the profound loss of fellow first responders and the ongoing health crisis faced by countless heroes who were there on that fateful day.

“Twenty-four years later, lives are still being lost to those attacks,” Tedesco stated, highlighting the critical need for continued support. He urged the community to advocate for these heroes and ensure they receive the care they deserve for 9/11-related health conditions.

Honoring the Past, Strengthening the Future

Tedesco also emphasized the importance of remembering and sharing the stories of that day. He spoke of the remarkable resilience that emerged from the tragedy, noting that an event meant to weaken and divide us instead strengthened us as Americans.

His message was a powerful call to action: to live every day with the same compassion and sense of community that defined the days and weeks following the attacks. As the ceremony concluded, Tedesco’s words echoed the collective sentiment of the evening: “May we always remember those whose lives were lost, may we continue to honor their families and our first responders, and may we Never Forget.”
