$660/Year Savings: Westwood Cracks the Code to Lower Energy Bills with No-Cost Solar and Park Upgrades

Westwood, New Jersey, is shining a spotlight on local energy savings! According to Mayor Ray Arroyo, the Borough’s proactive approach—combining a state-approved Community Solar program with smart municipal upgrades—is putting hundreds of dollars back into residents’ pockets while boosting sustainability.
The No-Cost Solar Program: Easy Savings for PSEG Customers
In July, Westwood residents were alerted to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) vetted and approved Community Solar Energy Program. This initiative allows utility customers to subscribe to a share of a local solar project without installing panels on their own roofs.
After answering resident questions in various forums, including a recent public presentation, Mayor Arroyo confirmed the program’s success:
- 259 Westwood residents are now enrolled in the program.
- It is a no-cost, opt-out-at-will program, meaning there are no hidden fees or long-term commitments.
- The estimated average annual savings for these PSEG customers is a massive $660.00!
The Mayor and Council remain committed to keeping residents informed of all state-approved cost-saving programs for their consideration. This program, in particular, offers a simple path to lower monthly expenses and support clean energy, regardless of home ownership status.
Borough Leads by Example: Westvale Park’s 75% Energy Cut
Westwood’s commitment to energy efficiency isn’t just for residents; the Borough is also actively pursuing savings on the municipal side. The most recent example is the impressive lighting upgrade at Westvale Park.
The old, high-intensity metal halide bulbs have been replaced with new, brighter, low-energy LED assemblies. This single switch delivers triple the benefit:
- 75% Less Power: The new LED lights draw significantly less electricity, drastically cutting the park’s energy consumption.
- 10x Longer Lifespan: LEDs have a lifespan of up to 10 years, compared to the 2-year replacement period for the old bulbs.
- Reduced Costs: The extended lifespan translates directly into savings on both maintenance labor and materials.
From residential utility bills to public park maintenance, Westwood is demonstrating how smart, state-backed programs and efficient local infrastructure can deliver real, measurable cost savings for the entire community.
I have strong doubts about the truthfulness of these “benefits”. It smells more like bs.
