New York NY, a subway commuter was killed after being dragged by a train in Manhattan on Monday. The incident happened around 5 p.m. at the 59th Street Columbus Circle station in Midtown .
Police say the victim, a 20-year-old man, Joseph Ancona, 20,of Westwood NJ, was running for the 1 train. While the details are fuzzy ,he either his backpack or piece of clothing got caught in the train. He was then struck and killed by that same train.
“While the investigation is in its earliest stages, it appears this was a terrible accident that did not involve criminal activity,” NYC Transit President Richard Davey said in a statement. “A person on the tracks was hit by a train and our thoughts are with his family, the train operator and riders who witnessed this tragedy. We will get to the cause and learn any lessons that may emerge as there is no higher priority than safety.”
The death comes just days after a man was shoved in front of a New York City subway train on Friday, suffering a broken collar bone.
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office announced last month that New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority would install security cameras across the city’s entire fleet of subway cars in an attempt to enhance safety.
Time for platform Gates where the train stops in fixed spot every time & then a new platform gate is activated & opened once the train completely stops for boarding ; then the external platform gate closes prior to the actual trains door closing for departure .would stop the door bandits holding train doors for slow pokes or runners who put everyone in danger
