Westwood NJ, Westwood Shade Tree Advisory Committee reports that a NJ high school student discovered that you stand a better chance of squashing a lantern fly if you approach them head on.
“Keep an eye out for spotted lantern flies. They are climbing trees to lay their eggs. A NJ high school student discovered that you stand a better chance of squashing them if you approach them head on. They sense you if you approach from the back or side and then jump and fly away. We used a metal ice chopper to squash them on the tree trunk. If they have already laid their eggs, scrape them eggs away from the bark.
These were on a silver maple.”

Tried spraying them with Windex – worked! Don’t know if it was the Windex or the suddenness of the spray that got ’em – don’t care – it worked!
