FAIR LAWN, NJ – A routine walk home took a startling turn for a Fair Lawn teenager on Monday afternoon, September 29th, when she was unexpectedly approached and scratched by a fox.
The incident occurred around 3:00 PM on Berdan Avenue, near the train crossing, according to Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Eric Eleshewich.
Quick Thinking Prevents Worse Injury
Police confirmed that a 16-year-old girl was walking in the area when a fox approached her. The animal reportedly latched onto her leg. Thankfully, the quick-thinking teen was able to kick the fox off and continue on her way.
The encounter resulted in a scratch to the girl’s leg. Her mother promptly drove her to Valley Hospital for medical attention, where she was treated and quickly released.
Fair Lawn Officials Urge Caution
While fox sightings are not uncommon in suburban areas like Bergen County, an aggressive encounter where the animal physically engages with a person is unusual and a cause for concern. Authorities in Fair Lawn and surrounding towns frequently advise residents on best practices for coexisting with local wildlife, including foxes, coyotes, and raccoons.
What Residents Should Do:
- Never Feed Wildlife: This includes leaving pet food outdoors, which can attract animals to residential areas.
- Secure Trash: Keep lids tightly sealed on garbage cans.
- Maintain Distance: Never approach a wild animal, especially one acting aggressively or appearing sick or disoriented.
- Report Aggressive Behavior: If you see a fox or any other wild animal acting strangely, immediately report it to the Fair Lawn Police Department.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for residents to remain vigilant and take precautions when walking, especially near wooded areas or tracks where wildlife is most active.
