RIDGEWOOD, NJ — If you’re waiting on a package or an important bill, you may be waiting a bit longer. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has issued a sweeping national alert as Winter Storm Fern—a “historic” weather event—batters the country with a lethal combination of heavy snow, damaging ice, and record-breaking Arctic temperatures.

As of Monday, January 26, 2026, more than 200 million people are under weather alerts, and the postal network is feeling the strain. From the Northern Plains to the Deep South, the USPS is warning that processing, transportation, and local delivery are all facing significant hurdles.

“Arctic Vortex” Conditions: Why Your Mail is Stalled

The USPS hasn’t just issued a general warning; they’ve taken the rare step of suspending specific service guarantees.

  • Priority Mail Express Suspended: The USPS has temporarily suspended service guarantees for all Priority Mail Express shipments through at least Monday, Jan 26.

  • Live Cargo Embargo: Due to what the USPS describes as “Arctic Vortex type temperatures,” the shipment of live animals (birds, insects, etc.) has been halted nationwide to protect them from extreme cold.

  • Surface & Air Networks Hit: Snow and ice accumulation on major highways from Texas to the Northeast have stalled ground transport, while air network disruptions are described as “extensive.”

“These conditions include heavy snow and blizzard conditions, damaging ice, record low temperatures, high winds, and long duration power outages.” — Official USPS Statement

Is Your State on the List?

The USPS has identified 34 states and the District of Columbia where mail delivery is currently at risk of delays or total suspension.

Regions Affected States Impacted
Northeast & Mid-Atlantic CT, DE, ME, MD, MA, NJ, NY, PA, VT, VA, WV, D.C.
Midwest & Great Lakes IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI
South & Southeast AL, AR, GA, KY, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX
West & Plains MT, NM

How to Check Your Local Delivery Status

While the storm is moving eastward, the “catch-up” period for the postal service is expected to last well into next week.

Pro-Tip for Small Businesses & Residents:

  1. Check the Service Alerts Page: Visit the official USPS Service Alerts page for real-time updates on Post Office closures in your ZIP code.

  2. Clear Your Path: Carriers cannot deliver if your walkway or mailbox is blocked by snow or ice. Clearing a path helps ensure your mail resumes as soon as it’s safe.

  3. Informed Delivery: Sign up for the free Informed Delivery tool to see digital previews of the mail scheduled to arrive once service resumes.

  1. Notwithstanding the weather, their service ‘guarantees’ for priority mail are pure bullshit. Packages and mail ALWAYS arrive late. I use “informed delivery’ and without exception, my priority mail packages both sent and received end up sitting for DAYS at various distribution centers. Thats what you get when DEI runs the show. UPS or Fedex whenever possible.

  2. Everyone just relax everything is frozen, this extreme cold weather is slowing everything down. You can’t move this snow by hand. It’s frozen like concrete. If you don’t have a machine, it’s staying there.

    1. Nonsense. They just suck, and you know it. The roads and parking lots were clear on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. They need to go away, privatize it.

  3. Where are they bringing the Snow from the CBD? Are they bringing in a melting machine?

  4. Still awaiting a small, shoebox-sided package mailed MONDAY from Clifton, to Waldwick. Expected delivery – Saturday. Beyond ridiculous.

By comparison, UPS offers next-day delivery, their standard ground service.

The USPS needs to be gone. They are no longer needed, like buggy whips. Use the internet. Drain the USPS DEI swamp.
