Ridgewood Trash Alert: No More Back-Yard Pickup Until Further Notice

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood residents, take note: the “Big Freeze” of 2026 is still impacting Village services. To keep our sanitation crews safe during these icy conditions, the Village of Ridgewood has officially extended the suspension of rear-yard collection until further notice.

If you’re used to the convenience of back-door pickup, it’s time to bundle up and move those bins. Here is everything you need to know to ensure your trash and recycling don’t get left behind.

Mandatory Curbside Placement

Until the ice clears and rear-yard service resumes, all residents must adhere to the following:

  • Placement: All trash and recycling containers must be placed at the curb.

  • Driveway Apron Option: If snowbanks have narrowed your curb space, please place your containers on your driveway apron.

  • Safety First: Do not place containers in the street, as they interfere with snowplows and emergency vehicles.

Special Bulk Refuse Collection: Wednesday, Feb. 4

Mark your calendars! A special bulk refuse collection is scheduled for both the East Side and West Side on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. However, this isn’t your typical bulk day. Due to weather constraints, strict limits are in place:

  • 5-Bag Limit: Collection is strictly limited to five (5) bags only.

  • No Large Items: Furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other oversized items will not be collected at this time.

  • Location: Place bags at the curb or on your driveway apron (not in the street).

How to Stay Updated

The Village will notify residents the moment it is safe to resume standard rear-yard collection. Stay in the loop by:

  1. Checking the Village Website: RidgewoodNJ.net

  2. Downloading the Apps: Use the My Ridgewood app or the Recycle Coach app for real-time alerts.

  3. Social Media: Follow the Village on Facebook and Instagram for instant weather-related updates.

  1. Welcome to south waldwick.
I understand if there is snow on a walk or a driveway, but no reason for this unless homeowner doesn’t clean it up.
When can I start parking my car on the lawn and put a recreational vehicle and boat in the driveway

  2. An extremely smart move, because everyone’s walkway driveway are frozen. The curbside is working out just fine. They should not have rear yard pick up behind peoples homes. It’s just opening a can of worms. If anything move your trash cans to right in front of your garage doors. That would be smarter and safer for everyone. Me personally I don’t want anyone in my backyard, it avoids so many problems. I know someone’s gonna get on here and stop crying and bitching. It’s not about we don’t love our sanitation and employees. It’s about so many other things.

    1. if you like to look at garbage cans you are welcome to move back to New york city

  3. The people that put the thumbs down why don’t you take the thumb and jammed up your ass along with your head. Oh, I need my backyard. Pick up you lazy slop. Bring your garbage can out of the driveway. You make me sick you sound so spoiled

    1. we PAY for rear yard pickup. You sound like a disgruntled union employee. If you don’t like what you are PAID to do, I am sure you could get a job at a private carter at half the wages, benefits and pensions. The trash collectors are paid on a union contract for ‘task work’. That means when the ‘task’ is completed they can go home. That’s why you see them moving fast. Their pay is based upon REAR YARD pickup. By allowing curbside, they are basically getting double pay since they complete the job in half the time. (whereas in NYC they drive plows if not picking up the trash)
