Hackensack NJ, Anna Sorokin, who was convicted on fraud charges for posing as heiress Anna Delvey, was released from prison in February 2021 but taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on a detainer six weeks later. Sorokin is now 31 and remains in ICE custody while she waits to see whether she will be deported to Germany.
Sorokin, who used the name Anna Delvey, was imprisoned in Bergen County for some time on a visa violation last year before she was moved to Orange County Correctional Facility in New York, as NJ.com reported.
Sorokin flew on a private jet, without paying, to Omaha, Nebraska to attend Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting and dropped by a secret VIP gathering hosted by Buffett at the city zoo.
Sorokin was born in Russia but lived in Germany before moving to the United States in 2013, according to ABC News. Prosecutors said at her trial that she used her fake identity “to swindle Manhattan’s elite, gaining access to exclusive parties, nightclubs and hotels,” ABC reported. She was accused of defrauding businesses of about $275,000 over 10 months, including hotels, restaurants, banks and a private jet company, the news outlet reported.
Her story is gaining popularity after Netflix released its 2022 miniseries, “Inventing Anna” on February 11, 2022. Fox Nation Host Nancy Grace said she was paid $320,000 for a series from Netflix .
To the writer: The accepted spelling appropriate to this blog title is “woman.” Using an E in place of an A as has been done here (“women”) leads to an alteration in both the pronunciation and interpretation of the word, and of your overall phrase.
Even allowing for what is called “creative liberty,” this one reader still finds this common swap to be unpleasant. The Ridgewood Blog, and anyone that makes the swap as seen above, seems to me to indicate a politic wherein occasionally the actions of a woman are expected to affect the lived experiences of many women, in ways that are not particularly just and hopefully could be corrected to whatever a better justice might be than accepting responsibility for all that occurs within one’s demographic.
I find it important to grow in our means of signaling that “woman” and “women” are two separate entities, as any individual deserves to be held accountable for personal actions alone. The swap between the terms woman and women is an undue reminder, in my estimation, that we are often held exceedingly accountable for the actions of others within our demographic instead of being interpreted for what is known of us as individuals. Any woman or person, I feel, deserves better than the annoyance of imagining whether the mistake is intentional.
Finally, if the mistake is attributable to a typographical error, maybe we can all stand to bone up on the use of our inner voices when finalizing our written works.
woman =/= women
