>Ridgewood Public Library: New Bolger Heritage Center houses historical treasures

>Ridgewood Public Library: New Bolger Heritage Center houses historical treasures

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2011

STAFF WRITER
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

In a corner of the Ridgewood Public Library’s (RPL) second floor sits an economically sized room that, on first glance, appears no different from any other library room. There are computers, stocked book shelves, tables and an office. But there is also a locked door at the back of this room, and the historical archive housed behind it distinguishes the room as something entirely different.

Since its official dedication in June, the Bolger Heritage Center at the Ridgewood Public Library has both expanded and consolidated the village’s collection of local historical documents for easy access by residents and local historians. Based in the aforementioned room, it is managed by librarian and Village Historian Peggy Norris and contains documents ranging from house deeds and old zoning maps to Village Council minutes and high school yearbooks.

The idea for the center took root as far back at 1995, when Library Director Nancy Greene first arrived in Ridgewood.

>Ridgewood Realtor Al Donohue remains president of LeTip of Ridgewood and Glen Rock

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2011
GLEN ROCK GAZETTE

Ridgewood — Aloysius Donohue, operating principal with Keller Williams Village Square Realty, has been elected to serve his sixth consecutive term as president of LeTip of Ridgewood and Glen Rock, a local business networking group with 40+ members. The chapter, which meets weekly to exchange business leads, is a local branch of the premier business networking organization, LeTip International.

“Al has defined himself as an outstanding businessman and leader, time and time again,” said LeTip member Gregg Trentham, a Glen Rock resident and financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. “He has established solid, long term relationships with his real estate clients, and this is clearly reflected in his leadership of our group. He earned this spot because he has members’ undivided trust and support.”

>Questions about the calculator that the school district requires in the high school:

They ask that the students purchase the TI Nspire calculator. There are three models that I have seen for $139 – $159. The calculators need to be recharged, much like a cellphone. Can’t wait to see the panic during the SAT when a calculator dies. There is software in i, graphics and even a color screen. I am sure that the batteries will be dying while in use.

Does the school district get money or products from Texas Instruments in return for requiring this calculator? Is it really that much better than the TI 84? And do they require the regular or 84 keypad? Feel free to spend my money.

Christie conditionally vetoes bills concerning pet euthanization and human life-sustaining treatment

Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday conditionally vetoed bills concerning pet euthanization and the use of Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment forms in New Jersey. He also signed legislation codifying income eligibility levels for the AIDS Drug Distribution Program (ADDP).

Christie conditionally vetoed bill (S-2923), citing the need to maintain a seven day hold period before dogs and cats received by animal shelters can be offered for adoption, transferred, or euthanized in New Jersey. Under existing law, any animal captured by an animal control officer must be held for seven days before it can be offered for adoption, transferred to a more suitable shelter, or euthanized.  (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)

Montclair parking system goes digital, allows people to pay meters via cell phone
Published: Tuesday, June 07, 2011, 9:30 AM
By Abram Brown/The Star-Ledger

MONTCLAIR — At Fumé in Montclair, customers frequently run in and out of the cigar shop on Bloomfield Avenue to check the time on the parking meter.
Locals go there for a smoke, and to gossip, so Montclair’s new initiative to let people pay for parking via a cell phone is a welcome change, Ralph Alberto, the shop’s owner, said Monday.

“I think it will help my business a great deal. It seems like a great idea,” he said, smoking a Dominican cigar with his buddies on a bench outside the store.
To use the new parking system, which went active May 23 and was formally announced Monday, a customer must download a smartphone app or call a phone number to park. The customer registers a username and leaves a credit card number on file with the company managing the system, Parkmobile. The app works on BlackBerrys, iPhones and Droids.

Christie wants changes in disabilities legislation

A task force set up by the New Jersey Legislature to facilitate closing residential centers for people with developmental disabilities was put on hold Thursday by Gov. Chris Christie, putting in limbo the movement to shift disabled individuals from institutions to less restrictive, community-based settings.

The governor sent the bill to create the task force back to lawmakers with a conditional veto, asking for changes he said would better equip the state to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Almost immediately after, the state Senate voted unanimously to adopt Christie’s changes, but those changes still need another vote in the Senate and approval from the Assembly before the bill can go back to Christie’s desk.  (Lederman, The Associated Press)

NJ decision on witness identification could have broad impact

A New Jersey Supreme Court decision ordering sweeping changes to how the state uses witness identification in criminal cases could have a broad impact and trigger legal challenges.

The state supreme court decision calls on New Jersey courts to take measures to address doubts surrounding the reliability of witnesses who identify criminal defendants, highlighting a growing awareness of flaws with relying on memory.

Judges must now consider several factors when determining witness reliability such as stress and timing of a positive identification, as well as race, the court said in a move hailed by criminal justice groups like the Innocence Project.

The decision could provide a roadmap for other states wrestling with the same issues, including concerns that misidentification of defendants can sometimes cause wrongful convictions.  (Kolker, Reuters)
