One year ago today, Matthew Sayles passed of salivary gland cancer. This website is the beginning of the Matthew Sayles Foundation, All About Matt.

We strive to help break the silence about the potential danger of salivary gland cancer that is affecting thousands of people and increase the information available to the everyday person who may not even know that this cancer exists.

Salivary gland cancer is a rare form of cancer that begins in the salivary glands of the body. Saliva is chiefly part of the digestive system as it aids in the breakdown of food in the mouth. In addition to many minor glands located throughout the mouth, there are three pairs of major salivary glands in the neck, mouth, and throat: the parotid (in front of the ear), the sublingual (underneath the jawbone), and the submandibular (in the back of the throat). The most common place where this cancer occurs is in the parotid glands (85% of cases), however salivary gland cancer can form in any tissues of the salivary glands. Tumors are formed when the typical cells become mutated and don’t die naturally as the normal cells would, creating an accumulation of cells. These cells can begin to spread into other parts of the body, or Metastasize.

Two Crashes Tie Up Traffic on Linwood Avenue Near Route 17

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police were called to the scene of two (2) separate motor vehicle crashes within 45 minutes of one another on busy Linwood Avenue near Route 17 Thursday afternoon.  The most serious of the incidents occurred in front of 933 Linwood Avenue, and resulted in two (2) cars being wrecked in T-Bone type crash, with the driver of one requiring ambulance transportation to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood (the driver of the second vehicle refused medical aid).

The second crash happened on the westbound Linwood Avenue Route 17 overpass.  In that crash, two persons were injured.  Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS personnel responded to both incidents; Paramus PD assisted with traffic control.  Traffic on Linwood Avenue near Route 17 was tied up for over an hour as a result of two incidents.

Washington airports spared sequester impacts

The chief of the FAA told Congress today that Washington-area airports will largely escape the effects of the air traffic controller furloughs — a blessing for lawmakers who fly out of the nation’s capitol.

Michael Huerta, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, told a congressional panel that the Washington region’s airports are spaced out enough and have enough spare capacity that furloughs to air traffic controllers won’t hurt as much here.

Darrell Issa: Hillary Clinton ‘wrong’ on Benghazi

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said Wednesday that his report shows former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “was just wrong” in saying she didn’t participate in the security reductions at the U.S. post in Benghazi, Libya, before the attack on the facility on Sept. 11, 2012.

“The secretary of state was just wrong. She said she did not participate in this and yet, only a few months before the attack, she outright denied security in her signature in a cable [dated] April 2012,” Issa said on Fox News. “The thing that our report shows and our continued investigation shows is they had a policy of normalization appearance. They did everything they could to make it look like they had won the war and had the peace.”

He added: “And so the policy that you saw in that April cable is the policy that led to the ambassador being exposed and killed, and led to the absence of a plan in what is still basically a war zone.”

Bergen County donors retreated as pay-to-play law took effect

Five major professional firms gave a total of more than $136,000 to candidates vying for elected office in Bergen County government in the seven years before a law that limited campaign spending by county vendors, an analysis of campaign spending reports shows.

But in the year after the pay-to-play law took effect, those same five companies — each of which received hundreds of thousands in county contracts over the last five years — spent exactly zero on the 2012 freeholder election. The Record’s analysis included only donations made in the companies’ names, not those of their principals or employees.

The dramatic drop in donations comes at a time when a fierce debate has broken out over an attempt to relax regulations on what no-bid contractors such as attorneys, accountants and engineers should be allowed to contribute to county political parties.

The Bergen County Freeholder Board has introduced an ordinance to relax the restrictions currently in place on donations. Most notably, the ordinance seeks to change the $2,500 limit on donations to county political parties to $20,000.

However, the Democrats who control the board signaled on Tuesday that they would be willing to change it to just $2,600 in exchange for the support of Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan.

Vehicle Strikes Pregnant Woman & Two Children in Crosswalk

Ridgewood NJ, A pregnant woman and her two (2) young children were struck by car as they crossed a busy Ridgewood street in a crosswalk on Thursday morning.  The accident occurred at the intersection of South Monroe Street and Godwin Avenue as a Nissan SUV was making a left turn from South Monroe onto Godwin.

The woman and one of her children were transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood with minor injuries.  The other child was taken home by a family member.   Responding were Ridgewood PD, Ridgewood EMS, and Ridgewood FD.  The accident remains under investigation; no summonses had been issued as of 0930 hours.

Bergen County pay-to-play changes face Donovan’s veto

Democrats look to skirt Pay to Play reform

Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan, hospitalized for a month for severe back problems, will return to her post in time to veto a pay-to-play ordinance that would “gut” a law aimed at curbing campaign contributions from no-bid contractors who do business with the county, her staff said Monday.

If Donovan, a Republican, vetoes the proposed ordinance, it could put Democrats in a bind.

With a majority on the Board of Freeholders, Democrats would be put in the politically tricky position of having to override her decision in order to bring about sweeping changes to how campaign finance is regulated in Bergen County. The proposed law would allow no-bid contractors such as lawyers, engineers and accountants, to contribute up to $20,000 per year to county political parties, giving the party chairmen control over large swaths of money and greater political influence. Current law limits contributions to the county parties to $2,500.

Ridgewood Police Reminded : Over 2,500 motorcycles are involved in crashes on New Jersey roads

Every year, over 2,500 motorcycles are involved in crashes on New Jersey roads. Many of these crashes are caused by the motorcyclist’s inexperience and lack of training. In fact, 90% of riders who get into crashes have no formal training.

They either taught themselves or learned from a friend. Don’t make the same mistake – take a rider safety course certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. They’re offered at over 15 locations in New Jersey.

Saudi National Questioned in Boston Bombings Was Allegedly Flagged on Terror Watch List

The Saudi national once considered a “person of interest” in the Boston Bombings and who Blaze sources say was being considered for deportation as early as Tuesday was apparently flagged on a terror watch list, according to Fox News reporter Todd Starnes.

Blaze sources say Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi was linked in some way to the Boston Bombings in a deportation document.

Fox News’ Todd Starnes is reporting that Alharbi was allegedly on this list and granted a student VISA without being properly vetted. These accusations come from a source who is purportedly familiar with the investigation. Starnes has more:

The Saudi national who was initially detained and then ruled out as a suspect in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack had been flagged on a terror watch list and was granted a student visa without being properly vetted, sources have told me.

A source close to the investigation revealed that Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi had been deemed inadmissible under the section of the Immigration and Nationality Act which declares ineligible for a visa – any alien who is engaged in or is likely to engage after entry – in terrorist activity.

At least two additional sources have confirmed to me that Ali Alharbi is set to be deported as early as this week, contrary to statements made by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. […]

Napolitano denied anyone was being deported in a heated exchange Thursday with Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) during a House hearing.

“I am unaware of anyone who is being deported for national security concerns at all related to Boston,” she said. “I don’t know where that rumor came from.”

Russia contacted US government ‘multiple’ times

WASHINGTON — Russian authorities alerted the US government not once but “multiple’’ times over their concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev — including a second time nearly a year after he was first interviewed by FBI agents in Boston — raising new questions about whether the FBI should have focused more attention on the suspected Boston Marathon bomber, according to US senators briefed on the probe Tuesday.

The FBI has previously said it interviewed Tsarnaev in early 2011 after it was initially contacted by the Russians. After that review, the FBI has said, it determined he did not pose a threat.

In a closed briefing on Tuesday, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee learned that Russia alerted the United States about Tsarnaev in “multiple contacts’’ — including “at least once since October 2011,’’ said Richard Burr, a Republican of North Carolina, speaking with reporters afterward.

Senators said the briefing also revealed failures among federal agencies to share vital information about Tsarnaev, indicating, they said, that the US government still has not established a strong system to “connect the dots’’ about would-be terrorists residing in America more than a decade after 9/11.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev got Mass. welfare benefits

Marathon bombings mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev was living on taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits even as he was delving deep into the world of radical anti-American Islamism, the Herald has learned.

State officials confirmed last night that Tsarnaev, slain in a raging gun battle with police last Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter. The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said those benefits ended in 2012 when the couple stopped meeting income eligibility limits. Russell Tsarnaev’s attorney has claimed Katherine — who had converted to Islam — was working up to 80 hours a week as a home health aide while Tsarnaev stayed at home.

In addition, both of Tsarnaev’s parents received benefits, and accused brother bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan were recipients through their parents when they were younger, according to the state.
