FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS

Join Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital and Rock & Rawhide
at our 6th Adopt-A-Pet Day on
Sunday, May 19th from 11am-4pm.

There are many ways to help a homeless pet.

Rock & Rawhide aims to increase adoptions and quality of life for dogs and cats in shelters, by providing distraction therapy and noise/stress reduction through the donations of unopened packages of food, treats, bleach, sponges, rubber gloves, cotton balls, etc., and clean new/used clothes, blankets, towels, toys, tough chew items, Kongs, Nylabones, bones, rawhides, leashes, crates, and more. In turn, dogs and cats can pass their evaluations at shelters, and show more of their personality, making them more adoptable.

Rock & Rawhide will be collecting donations at the event. If you have anything you would like to donate, please stop by. You can put any of these items into the washing machine first in order to clean them.

Thank you for helping the animals and we hope to see you there.

Obama fires acting IRS commissioner as pressure grows surrounding political targeting of conservative groups that sought tax-exempt status

Steven Miller is ousted but writes face-saving email announcing departure when his ‘assignment ends in early June.’
Obama: IRS ‘misconduct’ is ‘inexcusable and Americans are right to be angry about it, and I am angry about it.’
Jacob Lew, Obama’s trusted Treasury Secretary and former chief of staff, gave Miller his walking papers
IRS reportedly targeted 300 right-wing groups while letting left-wing organizations slide through with far less scrutiny

By David Martosko In Washington

PUBLISHED: 17:42 EST, 15 May 2013 | UPDATED: 18:15 EST, 15 May 2013

President Barack Obama has thrown his acting IRS commissioner overboard, making Steven Miller the highest-ranking political casualty thus far in a series of scandals that have swept his administration in recent weeks.

In a hastily called press conference in the East Room of the White House, Obama told reporters that he had asked Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew to find out who was responsible for a program that targeted tea party groups and other conservative organizations for a special level of intrusive questioning after they applied for tax-exempt charitable statuses.

‘Lew took the first step by requesting and accepting the resignation of the acting director of the IRS,’ Obama said.

‘It’s important,’ he added, ‘to institute new leadership that can help restore confidence going forward.’

But in an email to IRS employees, Miller claimed he would only be leaving next month because his assignment would be over.

Bergen County freeholders override County Executive Kathleen Donovan’s veto of less strict ‘pay-to-play’ ordinance

The Record

The Bergen County freeholders on Wednesday overrode County Executive Kathleen Donovan’s veto of a revised pay-to-play law that loosens restrictions on contributions to political parties by no-bid contractors doing business with the county.

The override vote was 6-1, with Maura DeNicola casting the lone dissenting vote. Voting to override were John Felice, David Ganz, John Mitchell, Steve Tanelli, Joan Voss and Tracy Zur.

The move drew protests from several advocates who say the revised law will bring an influx of vendor cash to county political party coffers.

“It amounts to an announcement by the party bosses of both parties that whatever the voters want on ‘pay-to-play,’ the voters are not going to get it,” said Robert Gulack of Fair Lawn, a member of Bergen Grassroots, which advocated for an original, more-restrictive law.

The override vote was a significant reversal from October, when the Freeholder Board was unable to muster the five votes needed to overturn Donovan’s first veto of a revised pay-to-play law. Back then, when Republicans held a 5-2 majority, the proposed changed were less sweeping that the measure introduced by the current board, where Democrats have a 4-3 majority. Wednesday’s vote was in keeping with a bipartisan agreement.

Internal Revenue Service asked tea party groups to see donor rolls ,Facebook posts ,what books people were reading.

The IRS wants YOU — to share everything
By DAVID NATHER, TARINI PARTI and BYRON TAU | 5/14/13 7:36 PM EDT Updated: 5/15/13 10:27 AM EDT

The Internal Revenue Service asked tea party groups to see donor rolls. It asked for printouts of Facebook posts.
And it asked what books people were reading.

A POLITICO review of documents from 11 tea party and conservative groups that the IRS scrutinized in 2012 shows the agency wanted to know everything — in some cases, it even seemed curious what members were thinking. The review included interviews with groups or their representatives from Hawaii, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas and elsewhere.

The long-awaited Treasury Department inspector general report released Tuesday says the agency itself decided some of its questions to conservative groups were way over the line — especially the one about donors

About A Mano
A Mano, meaning “by hand,” is focused on presenting the ultimate combination of authentic ingredients and techniques to create an unmatched Neapolitan experience. The restaurant has gone to great lengths to ensure the quality and authenticity of the craft of traditional Neapolitan foods, with results that speak mouthwatering volumes in every bite.

A Mano is one of only three restaurants in the United States certified by both Italian governing associations, the Verace Pizza Napoletana and Associazone Pizzaiuoli Napoletani, to offer authentic Neapolitan Pizza. The exacting standards are what stand A Mano apart from the rest, from the expertise of the pizzaiolo (the specially-trained pizza chef) to the use of ingredients imported from Naples (from all natural Caputo flour to the San Marzano tomatoes, grown in the foothills of Mt Vesuvio). Add-in fresh mozzarella made by hand daily, along with outrageous homemade gelato and desserts, and the true concept of artisan foods are revealed.

Down to the tiles and equipment from floor to ceiling, the restaurant’s entire makeup is imported from Italy. Its twin domed ovens with round chimneys, hand-built on site by Neapolitan Artisans using stones and volcanic soil from Naples, are the centerpiece of the restaurant, stretching to the ceiling of the two-story dining room. The architecture of the wood-fired ovens allow them to reach temperatures of 1,000 degrees, creating beautifully blistering, bubbling pizza in less than two minutes.

A Mano is located at 24 Franklin Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Hours of operation are: Monday through Thursday, 11:30 AM–10:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 11:30 AM-11:00 PM and Sunday 12:30 PM–10:00 PM. For more information, please call 201.493.2000 or visit www.amanopizza.com.

IS COLLEGE WORTH IT?

IS COLLEGE WORTH IT?: A FORMER UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION AND A LIBERAL ARTS GRADUATE EXPOSE THE BROKEN PROMISE OF HIGHER EDUCATION
By William J. Bennett with David Wilezol
Thomas Nelson, $22.99, 240 pages

William J. Bennett and David Wilezol’s “Is College Worth It?” asks and authoritatively answers one of life’s biggest questions.

The orthodox answer to the question, the authors write, is “Of course it is. Though the cost of attendance is ever increasing, those who go to college make more than those who don’t. And while the job market is bad, it is worse for those without a college degree.”

“Is College Worth It?” provides a thoroughgoing deconstruction of the “of course it is” delusion. It turns out that for too many, and maybe even most of our young people, the answer to this central question is, sadly, “no.” “Whether the standard of excellence for higher education is cultivating the mind and the soul or maximizing financial return on investment, most of higher education fails most students,” the authors write.

College has simply become too expensive. In the time between when I graduated from college and when my kids will start in a couple of years, the price differential, adjusting for inflation, has jumped 300 percent. When I went to college, my parents just wanted me to follow my muse, develop my mind and be happy. This led to my getting a doctorate — and to everyone’s surprise, I somehow figured out how to make a good living. However, a bachelor of arts degree in political science at a price of more than $150,000 now seems like a bad life choice. Somewhere during the past 25 years, the idea of following your muse in college got killed.

What killed it is explained by the “Bennett Hypothesis,” which by now should be elevated to the status of a theory or a law: “College tuition will rise as long as the amount of money available through federal student aid continues to increase with little or no accountability.”

Rep .Garrett Sends Letter to IRS Demanding Answers About NJ-based Discrimination
May 14, 2013

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), issued the following statement after sending a letter to the Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requesting immediate disclosure of whether any New Jersey-based organizations were improperly targeted by the IRS since 2010:

“The news about the IRS engaging in discriminatory practices is appalling.  The entire nation, Democrats and Republicans alike, should be outraged that the IRS is playing politics.  These actions are a wholesale violation of the organization’s mission to ‘enforce the law with integrity and fairness to all.’  Accordingly, I’ve sent a letter to Acting Commissioner Miller demanding that the IRS immediately disclose whether any New Jersey-based organizations were improperly targeted by this practice.”

Walking initiative in Ridgewood to raise awareness

The Ridgewood News

The benefits of walking are backed by various studies that show it can lead to improvements in cardiovascular health, concentration and mental well-being. In addition, more walking can result in environmental benefits like improved air quality and diminished traffic.

But in a village where pedestrian safety has been an issue, a push for walking and biking to school in the month of May is being accompanied by an enhanced push for safety awareness.

This month, the Federated Home and School Association (HSA) is reinforcing its “Stop, Look, Wave: Be Safe Be Seen” initiative, which was launched last year following several pedestrian accidents.

Obama’s claim he called Benghazi an ‘act of terrorism’

Obama’s claim he called Benghazi an ‘act of terrorism’
Posted by Glenn Kessler at 06:00 AM ET, 05/14/2013

— President Obama, remarks at a news conference, May 13, 2013

Once again, it appears that we must parse a few presidential words. We went through this question at length during the 2012 election, but perhaps a refresher course is in order.

Notably, during a debate with Republican nominee Mitt Romney, President Obama said that he immediately told the American people that the killing of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya “was an act of terror.” But now he says he called it “an act of terrorism.”

Some readers may object to this continuing focus on words, but presidential aides spend a lot of time on words. Words have consequences. Is there a difference between “act of terror” and “act of terrorism”?

Immediately after the attack, the president three times used the phrase “act of terror” in public statements:

“No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.”

— Obama, Rose Garden, Sept. 12

“We want to send a message all around the world — anybody who would do us harm: No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America.”

— Obama, campaign event in Las Vegas, Sept. 13

“I want people around the world to hear me: To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. It will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. No act of violence shakes the resolve of the United States of America.”

— Obama, campaign event in Golden, Colo., Sept. 13

Here’s how we assessed those words back in October:

Note that in all three cases, the language is not as strong as Obama asserted in the debate. Obama declared that he said “that this was an act of terror.” But actually the president spoke in vague terms, usually wrapped in a patriotic fervor. One could presume he was speaking of the incident in Libya, but he did not affirmatively state that the American ambassador died because of an “act of terror.”

Some readers may think we are dancing on the head of pin here. The Fact Checker spent nine years as diplomatic correspondent for The Washington Post, and such nuances of phrasing are often very important. A president does not simply utter virtually the same phrase three times in two days about a major international incident without careful thought about the implications of each word.
