RIDGEWOOD — They gathered at Saddle River County Park on Sunday, some sporting red T-shirts to remember family and friends they lost too soon to HIV and AIDS, and to bring awareness to the disease that affects more than 36,000 statewide.

“It’s important for people to understand and be safe and not to push anyone aside because of it,” said Melanie Sullivan of West Milford, who attended the event to honor her aunt, who died on Thanksgiving Day of complications from AIDS. “If it affects one person, it affects us all.”

Around 300 people, some pushing strollers and others leading dogs on leashes, took part in the annual New Jersey AIDS Walk. TheBergen County event, held in conjunction with four others across the state to benefit HIV and AIDS, was hosted by Buddies of New Jersey Inc. of Hackensack — a non-profit that helps people living with the disease.

At 21 years old, Graham Dooner has the same wit and easy charisma that kept him on the edge of trouble as a student at Ridgewood High School. He cracks jokes, he drops lines like “ipso facto” into conversation, he could talk for hours about the history of the labor movement in Paterson.

But nearly two years of intravenous heroin use have consumed the body of this 6-foot, 4-inch former varsity athlete. His pale arms are lined with track marks, slender yellow bruises from daily injections. Beneath his Knicks cap and a mop of reddish hair, Dooner’s handsome face is gaunt and clammy, haunted by a bluish pallor and spotted with sores. His yellowed teeth are worn along the edges.

“With shooting heroin, people say it is something they would never, never, ever do,” Dooner said. “But, I mean, things change in a flash, especially when you are addicted to opiates. Your levels — your ‘I won’t go past that line’ — they quickly diminish.

Congressional Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the Obama administration’s explanation of the Benghazi

Congressional Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the Obama administration’s explanation of the Benghazi

Congressional Democrats on Sunday distanced themselves from the Obama administration’s explanation of the Benghazi, Libya, attacks in the immediate aftermath of the fatal strikes, amid mounting evidence that suggests the information was revised to intentionally mislead Americans.

The original explanation of the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. outpost in Benghazi, Libya, was written by CIA officials, then revised by State Department and White House officials, according to news reports and witness testimony made available to Fox News.

Removed from the CIA’s so-called talking points were references to “Islamic extremists” and Al Qaeda in Libya. And five days later, Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made the Sunday talk show rounds to say the attacks were “demonstrations” sparked by protests in Egypt over an anti-Islamic video on YouTube.

Caffeinated Gum? Really?

energy drink with logo

Caffeinated Gum? Really?
By Jeffrey Bienstock, M.D.
Director of Pediatrics
The Valley Hospital
May 2, 2013

Ridgewood NJ,  These days, it seems foods and drinks with added caffeine are everywhere –from sodas, to sports and energy drinks, potato chips, candy and now gum.  The rapid growth in caffeine-infused foods and drinks has caught the attention of the Food and Drug Administration, which is considering placing limits on food makers’ ability to add caffeine.  Specifically, they want to investigate the safety of caffeine-infused foods and drinks and their effects on children and adolescents.

This trend warrants a look.  There are potential health risks for children and adolescents who consume this stimulant.  The latest recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is that so-called energy drinks containing caffeine should never be consumed by children. Unfortunately children often confuse energy rinks with sports drinks.

Sports drinks contain carbohydrates, minerals, electrolytes, and flavoring, and are intended to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise.  Although they may be useful for young athletes participating in prolonged, vigorous physical exercise, they tend to be overused and are usually unnecessary.

Unlike sports drinks, energy drinks contain stimulants including caffeine, guarana, and/or taurine. Rigorous review and analysis of the medical literature suggest that energy drinks are never appropriate for children or adolescents.  Because caffeine has been associated with harmful neurologic and cardiovascular effects in children, caffeine-containing beverages, including soda, and other foods with added caffeine should be avoided.

The AAP has issued recommendations that pertain to the use of sports drinks and energy drinks in children and adolescents, but can also be applied to other types of caffeine-infused foods.  They include the following:

• Parents need to be made aware of the distinction between sports drinks and energy drinks. The terms should not be used interchangeably.
• Energy drinks should never be consumed by children or adolescents, because the stimulants they contain pose potential health risks.
• Children and adolescents should avoid routine consumption of carbohydrate-containing sports drinks, which can increase the risk for overweight, obesity, and dental erosion.
• For pediatric athletes, sports drinks should be consumed in combination with water during prolonged, vigorous physical activity, when rapid replenishment of carbohydrates and/or electrolytes is needed.
• For children and adolescents, water, not sports drinks, should be the principal source of hydration.

Rep. Scott Garrett Makes Statement on Terrorist Joanne Chesimard

Rep. Scott Garrett Makes Statement on Terrorist Joanne Chesimard
May 3, 2013

Ridgewood, NJ – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), issued the following statement after the FBI added Joanne Chesimard to the Most Wanted Terrorist list for her 1973 murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster:

“New Jersey officials have made several attempts to have Ms. Chesimard extradited, but their efforts have been unsuccessful.  In the wake of the 40th anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of Trooper Forester, I once again implore the Obama Administration to make Ms. Chesimard’s extradition a top priority.  By aiding a convicted murderer, Cuba has insulted not only the state of New Jersey but also the U.S. legal system and U.S. law enforcement officers.  Joanne Chesimard robbed Rose Foerster of a husband, Eric Forester of a father, thousands of state troopers of a beloved colleague, countless others of a dependable friend, and the state of New Jersey of an outstanding public servant.  Good conscience cannot allow her crimes to continue to go unpunished.”

Background:  According to court testimony, New Jersey State Troopers stopped James Costan in 1973 for driving a vehicle with a broken taillight and slightly exceeding the speed limit.  When Mr. Costan was asked to exit the vehicle to explain a discrepancy on his photo identification, passenger Joanne Chesimard pulled out a gun and shot Trooper Foerster.  In the ensuing firefight, Trooper Foerster was killed.

In 1977, Ms. Chesimard was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.  After serving only two years of her sentence, she successfully escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey.  She eventually reappeared in Cuba in the 1980s.  According to authorities, she had been granted political asylum by the former Cuban president, Fidel Castro.

On May 2, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of a New Jersey state Trooper, Joanne Chesimard, was named a Most Wanted Terrorist by the FBI—the first woman ever to make the list.

Valley Hospital hearings focus on bed count, traffic solutions

The Ridgewood News

Ridgewood Planning Board members on Monday took exception to The Valley Hospital’s claims that it needs more patient beds, but on the next night they gave preliminary praise to plans to improve the network of roads in and around the area.

Two consecutive nights of public hearing testimony offered several significant signs of discord between board members and representatives from the hospital, which is seeking an amendment to the Ridgewood master plan that would essentially permit a large-scale expansion at the 15-acre site along North Van Dien and Linwood avenues.

Valley officials are asking permission to grow from a 560,000-square-foot neighborhood hospital into a healthcare center that, including a five-deck parking garage, will inflate beyond one million square feet. Key components of the plan include the razing of several aging buildings and new construction of state-of-the-art facilities in their stead.

Can Facebook lead to psychosis? One study says so

Researchers at the University of Tel Aviv say social networking can have seriously deleterious effects on the psyche.

Sometimes, normal humans take a liking to clinical terms and adopt them.

You go out on a date, and when your friends ask how it went you reply: “Oh, she’s psychotic.” Or perhaps: “He’s delusional.”

The justifications for such adjectives being used might be simple.

In the former case, the lady might have asked, just as the main course plates were cleared away, where the gentleman thought the relationship was going. This was after having described the details of her previous 17 relationships.

In the latter case, the gentleman might have talked about himself throughout the meal and offered mathematical details about his mental and physical prowess.

However, when these words are used in a clinical context, they have more precise definitions.

Family and friends of organ and tissue donors joined officials from The Valley Hospital and NJ Sharing Network for the unveiling of a new digital donor memorial tribute at the hospital to honor organ and tissue donors. Pictured to the left of one of the digital tributes are family and friends of organ donor James Dallas, formerly of Ridgewood. The Valley Hospital and NJ Sharing Network Unveil Memorial Wall to Honor Organ and Tissue Donors
April 29, 2013

Ridgewood NJ,The Valley Hospital, in collaboration with NJ Sharing Network, the non-profit organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for nearly 5,000 New Jerseyans awaiting life-saving transplants, unveiled “A Gift of Life Memorial” April 25 to serve as a tribute to the patients cared for at The Valley Hospital who became organ or tissue donors upon their death. The Memorial is a digital wall display that features photos of organ donors with a statement of tribute provided by their families.

The 90-minute program honoring organ and tissue donors featured Jackie Lue Raia, of Mahwah, whose mother donated three organs following a 2010 car accident. Forty-three others benefitted from her mother’s tissue. Invited guests who attended the unveiling ceremony also heard the personal story of Larry Bologna, from Butler, who received a liver that saved his life.

“Making the decision to be an organ/tissue donor may be easy, but in reality, when the time comes, we know that following through on that decision can be incredibly difficult,” said Peter Diestel, senior vice president of administration and COO of The Valley Hospital.  “So tonight, we want to say thank you to all of you.  It is your caring and compassion that brings hope to those waiting for an organ.

Morgan Johnson, hospital services manager at NJ Sharing Network, commended health care professionals throughout The Valley Hospital for their hard work and dedication to organ and tissue donation, and thanked donor families for their loved one’s final act of kindness: the gift of life to others.

“Without our hospital partners, without our donor families and without the commitment of so many people we do not exist,” Johnson said. “We are able to continue with our life-saving and life-restoring work because so many people — many of them gathered here today at Valley Hospital — believe and support our mission. These donor memorials will honor the selfless acts of others and give hope to those that continue to wait for the gift of life.”

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), more than 115,000 people nationwide are currently on the organ transplant wait list, including nearly 5,000 New Jersey residents. UNOS also estimates that one new name is added to the transplant wait list every 10 minutes.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives. One tissue donor can enhance up 50 lives. Donated corneas can help blind people see again and donated bone can prevent an amputation for a child with bone cancer. Other donated tissue, like skin, can help burn victims and a donated heart valve can save a life.

Anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can sign up to be a donor. In-person organ donor registration is available at local Motor Vehicle Commission agencies. Visit www.NJSharingNetwork.org to register online.

To learn more about organ and tissue donation or to get involved with NJ Sharing Network call 1-800-742-7365 or visit www.NJSharingNetwork.org to register as an organ and tissue donor.
