Readers feel planning board may have lost all credibility

Readers feel planning board may have lost all credibility

It still irks me that the PB will make their decision based upon the testimony of Valley’s Hired experts—-People, who like the project manager, really want the job! Testimony? It was a job interview—–a sales pitch.

Can you really believe this enormous project will have no effect on Ridgewood?

Years of construction with no impact on residents or neighboring schools.

1000 extra parking spaces and no extra traffic.

Double size of the building with no need for additional taxpayer paid infrastructure or services.

Drain millions of gallons of ground water with no impact on aquifer.

Any urban planner would tell you that a project of this size will have a significant impact on the Village.

Is the PB asking the right questions? There all hard working volunteers, but are they even qualified to do so? The Village needs to bring in some experts who are not paid by Valley to look at this project.

Ridgewood Police Have Issued a Bear Watch

file photo Ridgewood PD

Ridgewood Police Have Issued a Bear Watch
There has been a bear sighting in the area of Paramus road and Linwood Ave. If you see the bear Do Not approach and call 9-1-1

Bear-Proofing Your Property

Bear damage due to bird feeders is a very common and growing complaint. Do not begin feeding birds again, until mid-November when most bears have gone into hibernation.

Clean up spilled seed below feeder stations.

Keep garbage in airtight containers inside your garage or storage area until day of pickup. Double bagging and the use of ammonia will reduce odors that attract bears. Freeze food scraps before discarding into the garbage can.

Garbage for pickup should be put outside the morning of collection and not the night before.

A plastic garbage bag alone does not provide enough security. Always place bagged garbage in a secondary container.

Do not place meat or sweet food scraps in your compost pile.

Do not leave pet food or dishes outdoors at night.

Clean up and/or store outdoor grills after use.

Use a bear-proof dumpster, can, or store all garbage in a secure storage area without windows until day of pickup.

Erect portable solar powered electric fences around fruit trees and gardens. Do not allow fruit or vegetables to rot on the ground.

Compost Piles, if you must have a compost pile, enclose it with electric fencing. Don’t put meat, fish, melon rinds and other pungent scraps in the pile. Keep it aerated and properly turned. Add lime to promote decomposition and reduce odor.

Never intentionally feed bears to attract them to your yard for viewing.

Marriage rate dives to new lows since economic downturn

Marriage rate dives to new lows since economic downturn

Recession accelerates pace of decline and marriage rate is expected to remain low in foreseeable future.

U.S. marriage rates are at historic lows but may soon rebound a bit, demographers predict.

Numbers are rising among women ages 25-34, the college-educated and the affluent
Declines likely to set in again at end of decade
Average marriage age for U.S. men could reach 30

The marriage rate is at its lowest point in more than a century, and the number of marriages across the USA fell more than 5% during the recession. But a new analysis projects that pent-up demand and the large population of marriage-eligible Millennials, ages 18-34, means more will be headed to the altar over the next two years.

Cultural changes about whether and when to marry, the fact that two-thirds of first marriages are preceded by cohabitation and the recession’s financial fallout — including unemployment and underemployment — fueled the wedding decline. Projections from the private company Demographic Intelligence of Charlottesville, Va., says the signs are right for a temporary boost in weddings.

The company projects a 4% increase in the number of weddings since 2009, reaching 2.168 million this year; 2.189 million in 2014. Depending on the economic recovery, the report projects a continuing increase to 2.208 million in 2015.

NYC Taxpayers Help Sponsor Bloomberg’s Gun Control Group

NYC Taxpayers Help Sponsor Bloomberg’s Gun Control Group
8:06 AM, Jun 22, 2013 • By JIM SWIF

Reports surfaced earlier this week that the webpage of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) appears to have been purchased and hosted by City of New York.

The group was co-founded by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston mayor Thomas Menino to “share best practices, develop innovative policies, and support legislation at the national, state, and local levels that will help law enforcement target illegal guns.”

In a phone call with THE WEEKLY STANDARD, Mayor Bloomberg’s press secretary Marc La Vorgna confirmed the City of New York’s involvement with the domain’s purchase and hosting.

When asked whether the purchase and subsequent hosting of the domain by New York City’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications was accidental or intentional, La Vorgna replied that the purchase had “definitely been vetted.”

JET-LAG CURE?

dv370009a.jpg

LE BOURGET, France (AP) — Here’s a look at some innovations from this week’s Paris Air Show:

JET-LAG CURE?

You know how you feel — and look — when you get off a trans-Atlantic flight? Exhausted, blood-shot eyes, swollen ankles. Partially that’s jet-lag. But partially that’s because you’ve effectively been up a mountain for several hours, with all that entails, including increased heart rate and shortness of breath.

Some manufacturers are working to reduce those effects — thanks to new composite materials that are more fatigue-resistant themselves. Currently, commercial jets fly at between 35,000 and 45,000 feet and pressurize their cabins to bring what your body feels down to around 8,000 feet.

But Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, which is primarily made of composites, brings you down to 6,000 feet. Normal, aluminum-built planes could be pressurized to that level, too, but they would take more of a beating to do so and would have a shorter lifespan. If you’re really rolling in it, private jets, like the new Gulfstream, will do you one better: life in the cabin is below 5,000 feet.

Detroit Recovery Plan Threatens Muni-Market Underpinnings

Detroit Recovery Plan Threatens Muni-Market Underpinnings
By Brian Chappatta & Martin Z. Braun – Jun 17, 2013 12:01 AM ET

Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr’s plan to suspend payments on $2 billion of Detroit’s debt threatens a basic tenet of the $3.7 trillion municipal market: that states and cities will raise taxes as high as needed to avoid default.

Orr, appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder to oversee Michigan’s largest city, proposed a deal last week that included skipping a $39.7 million payment on pension-obligation debt. The city is also set to default on unsecured unlimited-tax and limited-tax general-obligation bonds as it grapples with $17 billion in liabilities to avoid a record bankruptcy.

By calling into question the safety of any security backed by a government’s general obligation to pay what it owes, Orr, 55, imperils similar debt across Michigan, the eighth-most-populous state. As local governments strive to rebound from the longest recession since the 1930s, they may confront higher borrowing costs.

Government could use metadata to map your every move

Government could use metadata to map your every move
By Lindsay Wise and Jonathan S. Landay | McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — If you tweet a picture from your living room using your smartphone, you’re sharing far more than your new hairdo or the color of the wallpaper. You’re potentially revealing the exact coordinates of your house to anyone on the Internet.

The GPS location information embedded in a digital photo is an example of so-called metadata, a once-obscure technical term that’s become one of Washington’s hottest new buzzwords.

The word first sprang from the lips of pundits and politicians earlier this month, after reports disclosed that the government has been secretly accessing the telephone metadata of Verizon customers, as well as online videos, emails, photos and other data collected by nine Internet companies. President Barack Obama hastened to reassure Americans that “nobody is listening to your phone calls,” while other government officials likened the collection of metadata to reading information on the outside of an envelope, which doesn’t require a warrant.

But privacy experts warn that to those who know how to mine it, metadata discloses much more about us and our daily lives than the content of our communications.

So what is metadata? Simply put, it’s data about data. An early example is the Dewey Decimal System card catalogs that libraries use to organize books by title, author, genre and other information. In the digital age, metadata is coded into our electronic transmissions.

The New Jersey GOP’s Secret Senate Race Weapon

large_LONEG

The New Jersey GOP’s Secret Senate Race Weapon
By Peter Roff

Democrats – and most Republicans – expect that the party will keep the seat held on and off since the 1980s by the late New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg in the upcoming special election. GOP Gov. Chris Christie certain seems to believe it which is probably why, having determined the law required him to schedule a quick election, he picked a Wednesday in October – giving the special election a $24 million price tag – just two weeks before he must face the voters in his regularly scheduled bid for a second term.

If he hadn’t, Christie might have been on the ballot at a time when the Senate race was energizing Democrats to turn out, making his expected path to an easy win as bumpy as the north end of the Jersey Turnpike.

All that’s fine with former Bogota, N.J. Mayor Steve Lonegan, the former leader of the New Jersey chapter of Americans for Prosperity and the GOP’s best chance to win a Senate race since Jeff Bell ousted incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Clifford Case in the 1978 primary.

[See a collection of political cartoons on Congress.]

Despite losing the GOP primary to Christie four years ago Lonegan is a force to be reckoned with. Legally blind, he was for 12 years the mayor of Bogota, which gave Barack Obama better than 65 percent of the vote in the last election. For 11 of those years Lonegan also had working control of the city council, which allowed him to author and pass tax cutting measures, reduce the size of government, and put into place a law requiring any city budget that increased spending by more than the rate of inflation to be ratified by a vote of the people in this overwhelmingly Democrat community.

Lonegan has compiled an impressive political resume, leading two successful statewide campaigns against big spending ballot measures – which is a nice contrast with his opponent in the GOP primary, Dr. Alieta Eck, whose experience in politics seems not to go much beyond this speech to the extremist John Birch Society. Lonegan’s network is formidable, turning in 7,000 signatures to get on the ballot in just about 36 hours when only 1,000 were required – an indication that his political base, inspired by his Chris Christie-style plain speaking, is highly energized and ready to go.

Resident upset by ‘mean-spirited’ behavior of  Mayor Paul Aronsohn, Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli, and Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck

Councilman Riche deserves an official retraction of accusations

Friday, June 21, 2013
The Ridgewood News

To the Editor:

During three meetings of the Village Council on May 22, June 5 and June 12, a colorful assortment of adjectives was used by members of the public to describe the behavior of Mayor Paul Aronsohn, Deputy Mayor Albert Pucciarelli, and Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, and the events surrounding their public treatment of fellow councilman Thomas Riche.

Descriptions included: despicable, flogging, besmirched, disgraceful, embarrassing, shameful, witch hunt and others. I have been heartened to see citizens turning out in great numbers at Village Council meetings to express their disgust with the mean-spirited behavior of these three elected officials.

Readers take issue with “Hauck’s ‘character’ letter in the Ridgewood News

GwennHauckExBdmemberCommunityRelations_theridgewoodblog.net

Readers take issue with “Hauck’s ‘character’ letter in the Ridgewood News

There was an interesting letter in The Ridgewood News on June 21. The letter was entitled: “Hauck’s ‘character’ overrides her past work with Valley.”

https://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/212438891_Letter__Hauck_s__character__overrides_her_past_work_with_Valley.html

Although letter writer John G. Hartnett identified himself as Councilwoman Hauck’s neighbor, he failed to disclose that he is also the long time rector of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, thus the spiritual leader of Ms. Hauck’s own church.

Is it just me, or was the Reverend’s failure to disclose more than “I’m a neighbor” a deliberate omission of fact? And, was the Reverend’s letter solicited or unsolicited?

The letter immediately following this one was certainly more to the point. When your next door neighbor finally speaks out about a matter that has been on people’s minds for God knows how long, and then does not fully disclose who he really is, you really have to wonder. On the other hand,it’s a lot like Valley…tell only part of the story.

Facebook glitch exposes info of 6M users
Brett Molina, USA TODAY 5:39 p.m. EDT June 21, 2013

Facebook says a glitch may have exposed portions of the personal contact information, such as email addresses or phone numbers, of roughly 6 million users.

In a statement posted Friday, the social network says the bug is tied to uploading contact lists or address books, which are used in creating friend recommendations.
