RIDGEWOOD — Members of the Village Council acknowledge that a lightning detection system installed last year at parks and schools is being ignored by athletes and coaches.
Resident Boyd Loving told the council that during a recent storm, the lightning detection system sounded. Yet three baseball games continued, Loving said, on the fields behind Village Hall.
Loving suggested an ordinance be put in place to penalize those who ignore the lightning detection warnings, which sound when lightning strikes are imminent within a 10-mile radius.

So let me get this straight – Members of the Council were aware that people were ignoring the expensive warning system but took no action until a resident stepped forward? Asleep at the switch for sure.
The coaches and parents are fools. A life saving system was installed and they ignored it. Place blame on the adults who were responsible for these kids.
Why would you expect otherwise? The Mayor ignores the advice of the Village Attorney. The triumverate ignores the voices of the outraged citizens. Ignore, ignore, ignore.
Oh stop already….the stupid coaches and parents are the problem, not the M&C (in this case). FYI, these things are not that expensive and you can’t pass an ordinance to inject common sense into someone’s head.
well put #3
I was there last Monday. The umpires immediately stopped action ON ALL 3 FIELDS. That was at 6:45PM.
Some kids went to the bandshell, a few walked into the library while others milled around. Coaches and parents continued to talk to each other, etc.
Should we build a fallout shelter for the kids at each of the venues at each of the venues in tow so that the kids can have cover each time lightning strikes are detected…?
Ridgewood PD talked to the umpires at about 6:30PM and then they drove away. My assumption is that they must have been satisfied with the way the waiting period was being conducted.
The all clear sign came at 7:40PM but 10 seconds later a flash of lighting cut across the sky. This meant another 30 minute waiting period. At that point both softball games ended while the baseball game waited to resume.
Finally at 8:10PM the baseball game was started again.
Boyd is a strange guy.
At what point do we say here in town that Boyd just wants attention…?
Someone said – Why would you expect otherwise? The Mayor ignores the advice of the Village Attorney. The triumverate ignores the voices of the outraged citizens. Ignore, ignore, ignore.
Shocking! How did you miss this opportunity to blame the mayor, Senator Menendez, Vice President Biden, President Obama and every other politician you don’t like
Why didn’t you just cancel the game? Baseball/softball takes long enough without standing around. The games need a clock, max 90 minutes for youth games.
Boyd was cut from this 5th grade travel team. Then he picked up his camera and the rest is history.
lets not put the blame on this on boyd. He does a great job of watching over the town and keeping an eye on things. Lets blame the coaches and the parents for not following the rules…
