Ridgewood NJ, known for its products like Post-Its, 3M reached a settlement with US cities and towns over their public water supplies that have been contaminated by “forever chemicals” .  3M agreed to pay between $10.3B and $12.5B over a 13-year period, depending on the number of water systems that are found to be toxic.

Pending court approval, the agreement calls for the firm to provide funds to test for and treat contamination from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The funding will be made available to eligible public water suppliers that have detected PFAS in drinking water, as well as those that may detect the chemicals—which have been widely used in consumer goods, firefighting foam and industrial applications—at any level in the future.

Three major chemical manufacturers Chemours, DuPont and Corteva have already announced settlements in which they will pay nearly $1.2 billion to settle claims that they contaminated water sources across the United States with harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS.

How this will impact water companies like Ridgewood Water is is yet to be determined .

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette to make a significant announcement regarding remediation of PFAS pollution, commonly referred to “forever chemicals,” which are known to be linked to serious health conditions and contaminate groundwater.
