Ridgewood NJ, on Friday night, the Maroons improved their record  to 3-0 after a 7-6 victory over Northern Highlands. Defense was the name of the game on Friday and both the Maroons and the Highlanders struggled in the first half offensively . The Maroons offence was bogged down with penalties .

Ridgewood took the second half kickoff with a return by Tahir Kenyatta who put the Maroons on their own 35-yard line. Ridgewood moved the ball well, getting their longest play of the night, a 37-yard pass from quarterback Jack Foerch to receiver Zach Kranz to put the Maroons up in the redzone for the first time . A couple plays later Foerch connected with Brendan Chanley for a 12-yard touchdown score to put Ridgewood up 7-0 with 7:45 left in the third quarter.

With the lead  7-0 going into the final quarter the Ridgewood offense would turn the ball over . Northern Highlands would start with possession at their own 37 yard line, and were helped  by a facemask penalty on  Ridgewood.  With goal to go , Highlanders quarterback Nate Johnson pushed his way into the endzone from two yards out. Northern Highlands was thwarted by Riudgewood ‘s Defence on their attempt at a  two-point conversion leaving Ridgewood with a 7-6 advantage with 5:41 left on the clock.

The Maroons were unable to capitalize on recovering an onside kick. Once again a penalty forced the Maroons to punt right around midfield but disaster struck when the snap sailed way over the head of punter Jack Schultz near the 25 yard-line of Ridgewood. Schultz recovered  the ball and was able to  get the punt away.

With great field position, Northern Highlands had a chance to get into field goal range and take the lead. Ridgewood’s defense again stepped up .After a sack on first down the Highlanders managed to regain the yardage and on 3rd and less then one, the Highlanders quarterback Nate Johnson went deep down the left-hand sideline looking for a touchdown, but the receiver could not pull it in . A 4th down quarterback sneak led to a first down and the Highlanders took another shot towards the endzone with only 30 seconds on the clock. But the Maroons Jack Schultz came up big , leaping into the air to snag the interception at the goal line and secure the victory for Ridgewood.

Next week Ridgewood is home against (4-0) Passaic Tech .
