RUTHERFORD, NJ — A mysterious early-morning 911 call on Sunday, September 1 led Rutherford Police to a man sitting on the bleachers at a local football field with a stolen knife, authorities said.

At around 3:20 a.m., dispatchers received a call from a man who said he was at a field before abruptly hanging up, according to Rutherford Police Chief John Russo.

Officers Track Caller to Memorial Field

Lt. Craig Capoano traced the call to Memorial Field, monitored surveillance cameras, and spotted the man later identified as Brian Smith, of Union Beach.

Officers Thomas Kilroe, Courtney Dembowski, and Justin Finelli responded and found Smith holding a knife. Police said Smith complied with commands and was taken into custody without incident.

Knife Reported Stolen From Friend’s Home

The knife, found on the ground near Smith, was later reported stolen by a Rutherford resident whom Smith had been staying with, Russo confirmed.

Smith was processed at police headquarters and charged with:

  • Unlawful possession of a weapon

  • Theft

He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are still investigating the unusual incident and have not disclosed why Smith placed the initial 911 call.
