Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood blog has observed of late that there are some downtown shop owners who routinely put their merchandise out on the sidewalk for display. We have just been told that this is not permitted by ordinance. Merchandise can only be legally put out for sidewalk display on authorized “Ridgewood Sales Days.” How ridiculous is that?
Chapter 239 Sidewalk Sales
Sidewalk sales are permitted only during Ridgewood Sale Days and by any retail or commercial establishment where goods or services are sold upon the public right-of-way, namely the sidewalks immediately in front of any place of business where the goods or services are sold; or where permitted on public property with specific written permission of the Village Manager or on private property with written permission of the owner of record. Sidewalk sales are only permitted during Ridgewood Sale Days and only to the retail or commercial licensees who have obtained a license pursuant to this chapter.
Huh?

I’m shocked that Mayor Vagianos, the King of all things related to improving business in the downtown, hasn’t asked that this rule be squashed.
Somebody should tell the owner of the Hot Jewelry Box that the sidewalk sales permit they’ve got displayed in their window expired in December of 2023.
Fleet Feet, Hot Jewelry Box, and the beauty supply & children’s clothing stores near UPS are the primary “ridiculous law” breakers.
The stores need to survive and it’s very hard with the amount of rent they have to pay. So they need to do more advertising to get people to shop look at the percentages that people shop online, and people do not want to pay for parking. And then you’re limiting when they can open their store close their store Which days they cannot operate on. I would never pay for parking number one, number two I like to go shopping on a Sunday. It’s convenient for me and number three if I can get the item online that I know I want I’ll just order it and don’t deal with all the bullshit. You go back the last 30 years do you remember the 80s? What about the 90s? We had over 65 stores empty, it was a ghost town
Having merchandise on the sidewalk on occasion for special sale, events is great. But not all the time. A business’ property does not extend out onto the public sidewalk. This is like the people who seem to think that they are entitled to park their cars all over the street because they don’t have enough room in their driveways or garages. No. The sidewalks and the street are public domain. We have a beautiful village, and part of it is because of the rules that govern a pleasant atmosphere. If people have their cars all over the street all the time, it looks like crap. If stores have their merchandise out on the sidewalks all the time, it looks like crap.
Thank you.
Amen.
Open up on a Sunday, they better stop bringing business into town. Especially during the summer Friday nights, Saturday nights half-day Sunday they better do whatever they can. They have the parking garage to hold extra people, and that’s not making any money. Who the hell is running this town because every decision they make is not making any money can you imagine This was a corporation? It would be bankrupt again and again over and over.
You need dressing for that word salad
I understand what people are saying about items on the sidewalk, looking sloppy, if it’s done tastefully it would work maybe just on weekends they gotta do something
There are good reasons for those rules. It makes the town look like garbage. Sorry if they can’t keep their businesses going. Then close them.
