Wayne NJ , a New Jersey State trooper, Alexander Lark, is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty and assault, after allegedly killing his dog, vandalizing public property, and attacking a fellow officer outside the Wayne Police Department.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, March 27, when residents of a condominium complex reported a disturbance and a possible gunshot from one of the units. Wayne Township Police responded to the scene and later encountered Lark outside the Wayne Police Department around 1 a.m., acting erratically and destroying a stop sign, according to Detective Captain Dan Daly.

Altercation with Police and Arrest

As officers attempted to calm him down, Lark allegedly shoved one of them and tried to flee. Several officers subdued him, but he resisted arrest, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Authorities noted that Lark appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis or was under the influence of an unknown substance. He was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Discovery of the Dog’s Death

During their investigation, officers determined that Lark was a resident of the condo complex where the initial disturbance was reported. Upon entering his residence, they discovered his dog shot dead, with Lark’s Glock service handgun nearby, court records revealed.

Charges and Suspension

Lark, an eight-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police, has been suspended without pay. He faces multiple charges, including:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Resisting arrest
  • Criminal mischief
  • Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
  • Animal cruelty (pending charges)
  • A municipal violation for discharging a firearm

The Wayne Police Department has notified the New Jersey State Police Internal Affairs Division about Lark’s arrest. As the legal process unfolds, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
