Paramus NJ, a 49-year-old man has been charged with assault and child endangerment after a violent incident involving a young girl at the Bergen Town Center Mall in Paramus, New Jersey, according to local authorities.
Shocking Incident at Local Mall
On Friday evening, just after 6:30 p.m., Paramus police responded to reports of a disturbing altercation between a man and a juvenile female at the popular shopping center. Witnesses on the scene told officers that the man, later identified as David Cohen, had physically assaulted the girl in public.
According to Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti, Officer Hugo Rodriguez-Pena arrived quickly and was directed to the suspect by concerned bystanders. Witnesses reported that Cohen struck the girl multiple times with an open hand, headbutted her, and screamed, “I hope you die!” during the assault.
Police Confirm Evidence and Make Arrest
Police confirmed the girl had visible bruises and obtained surveillance footage that supported witness accounts. Cohen was immediately arrested at the scene and charged with simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The incident prompted involvement from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency. The child’s mother was notified and arrived at the scene.
Suspect Released After Initial Court Processing
Cohen was taken to Bergen County Jail and held until his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court. He was released on Sunday, pending further legal proceedings.
