Dumont NJ, the 2020 murder case involving Jeffrey Daniels, accused of fatally stabbing 36-year-old Michelle Boccellari Burns, remains on hold as the court awaits a critical report on Daniels’ mental state during his police interrogation.

Daniels, arrested in June 2020, appeared before Judge James Sattely on Monday for a status update. The delay in the case centers on a psychological evaluation that will assess whether Daniels fully understood his Miranda Rights before speaking to police.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Daniels confessed to attacking Burns following an argument, stating he tried to “snap her neck” and “choke her until she went to sleep.” He then reportedly retrieved a kitchen knife and stabbed her in the neck multiple times.

Mental Health Report at the Center of Trial Delay

Daniels’ defense attorney, Ilene McFarland, explained that personal issues have delayed the completion of the report but emphasized that the evaluating doctor, a longtime collaborator with the public defender’s office, is still working diligently.

Despite acknowledging the unusual length of the delay, McFarland stressed the importance of the evaluation to Daniels’ defense strategy, especially regarding the legality of his police statements.

Assistant Prosecutor Yomara Castro voiced concerns about whether the timelines provided by McFarland were realistic, citing frustration over repeatedly missed deadlines.

“I am sympathetic to whatever she’s going through personally, but at this point, I have to question whether or not she’s being realistic with the timeframe that she’s provided,” Castro said.

McFarland responded that seeking a new expert would create even further setbacks but remained committed to obtaining the report, considering it vital to the defense.

Next Steps in the Case

Judge Sattely scheduled a follow-up meeting for April 28 to review the status of the psychological report and determine how the case will proceed.

Until then, the future of the trial remains uncertain as both sides await crucial information that could significantly impact the defense’s strategy and the overall outcome of the case.

  1. black man viscously murdering white women (mother of 2 young children) in June 2020 just weeks after George Floyd in a town I lived in. I’m just hearing the story now. Seems like this was swept under the rug.

And yet so many white people on the left supported BLM in 2020. Criminals the left martyrd like George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Jacob Blake, etc

Yall are a disgrace to your own race but more importantly humanity as a whole.
Supporting criminals in the name of social justice

  2. We got major mental health issues, and village hall. Look at the shit that’s going on inside that building. It’s turning out to be some institution. What do they find these people, some of them really screwed up, no wonder. The morale is down to shit. Backstabbing employees, storytellers, bullshit artist, a tremendous amount of troublemakers throughout the village. A lot of snakes, and so many of them are so jealous. You can’t even make this shit up., what an embarrassment. At one time Ridgewood was the leaders, not anymore, what a bunch of puppets. Wait until some of the employees write this and they will be putting thumbs down. Dream on suckers, thumbs up on this one everyone knows what’s going on. All the way down to Trenton.
