Ridgewood Baseball Coach Breaks Bergen County Record with 631st Career Win

Ridgewood, NJ – In a historic achievement on Monday afternoon, the Ridgewood High School Varsity Baseball team edged out Paramus 1-0, marking their 13th victory of the 2025 season. But the real headline? The win secured Coach Kurt Hommen’s 631st career victory, officially making him the winningest baseball coach in Bergen County history.

Coach Hommen Sets Historic Benchmark

With 631 career wins, Coach Hommen surpasses the legendary Frank Salvano, who previously held the North Jersey record with 630 wins at St. Joseph Regional from 1988 to 2015. Hommen now stands alone at the top of Bergen County baseball and joins Salvano as one of only two coaches in North Jersey’s exclusive “600 Club.”

To grasp the magnitude of this achievement, consider this: even averaging 20 wins per season, it would take over 31 years to reach 631 wins—an extraordinary feat, especially for coaches in public school programs.

“It’s a testament to the consistency, leadership, and mentorship Coach Hommen has provided for decades,” said one Ridgewood fan.

Two-School Legend: Tenafly and Ridgewood

Coach Hommen’s milestone win also makes him the first coach in New Jersey history to earn 300 wins at two separate schools. From 1990 to 2008, Hommen led Tenafly High School to a 309-156 record (.678), before taking over at Ridgewood in 2009 and continuing his winning tradition.

Even more impressive, Hommen’s pursuit of the record was delayed by the cancellation of the 2020 baseball season due to the COVID-19 pandemic—highlighting how remarkable his longevity and resilience have been.

Garrett Greaney Delivers on the Mound

The record-setting game also featured a standout performance from RHS pitcher Garrett Greaney, who pitched a complete game shutout to secure the tight 1-0 win over Paramus. His effort on the mound sealed the historic moment for Coach Hommen and the Ridgewood baseball community.
