Ridgewood NJ, Kurt Hommen achieved another significant milestone in his illustrious coaching career, solidifying his place as one of North Jersey’s most successful baseball coaches.
In a commanding performance, Ridgewood secured a resounding 16-2 victory over Emerson in a brisk six innings on Saturday, marking Hommen’s 600th career win. Following the game, Hommen was rightfully honored with a commemorative sign that proudly displayed, “Congratulations COACH HOMMEN 600 WINS.”
Reflecting on his achievement, Hommen, now in his 34th season coaching, expressed gratitude for the opportunities he’s had at both Tenafly and Ridgewood. “I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of two exceptional schools,” he remarked. “We’ve had tremendous success with these teams, and I consider myself lucky to have coached at such esteemed institutions.”
Hommen’s feat places him in esteemed company, with only Frank Salvano surpassing him as North Jersey’s winningest baseball coach, having notched 630 victories at St. Joseph from 1988 to 2015. Hommen joins Salvano as one of only two coaches in the “600 Club,” an elite group that includes just nine coaches in North Jersey with 500 or more wins. His journey to 600 wins was prolonged by a year due to the cancellation of the 2020 spring season amid the pandemic.
Among Hommen’s remarkable achievements are two Bergen County titles, one each at Tenafly and Ridgewood, as well as five sectional championships and a coveted NJSIAA championship, clinched last year with Ridgewood’s Group 4 title win, featuring several players from his current roster.
