Mars, President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and founder of SpaceX, are united by a bold vision: making human life on Mars a reality.

Musk believes his company can land humans on the red planet by 2029, a timeline significantly more ambitious than NASA’s projection, which places human Mars missions around 2040 — calling even that an “audacious” goal. Meanwhile, China aims to establish an autonomous Mars research station by 2038, signaling a new global space race.

Why Mars? Humanity’s Next Frontier

Elon Musk views Mars colonization as vital to the survival of humanity. With growing threats such as climate change, natural disasters, and global conflict, Musk sees Mars as a “backup plan” for civilization. Scientists, however, are intrigued by Mars for different reasons — especially the potential discovery of extraterrestrial life.

“The early Earth and Mars were twins,” said Robert Zubrin, president of The Mars Society. “If life arises naturally wherever the conditions are right, then Mars should have once hosted life as well.”

The Daunting Challenges of Mars Missions

Despite the vision, the technical barriers to a manned Mars mission are enormous. According to Amit Kshatriya of NASA’s Moon to Mars Program, there are several critical problems that must be solved:

  • Safe landing on Mars’ thin atmosphere

  • Radiation protection during deep space travel

  • Reliable life support systems

  • Advanced propulsion technology

  • Long-term sustainability and logistics

Each of these represents a major leap from the capabilities of today’s space technology.

SpaceX Starship: The Key to Mars

Central to Musk’s Mars plan is Starship, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever developed. In March, SpaceX completed its eighth test flight, successfully retrieving the Super Heavy booster — though the Starship craft itself exploded upon reentry.

Despite the setback, SpaceX is moving forward quickly. A ninth test flight is expected soon, as the company races to make interplanetary travel a reality.

A Glimpse of Life on Mars

To prepare for future missions, scientists and researchers are already simulating life on Mars. CNBC recently visited the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah — one of the closest analogs on Earth to the Martian environment. There, experts are testing what daily life, scientific exploration, and survival could look like on Mars.

Conclusion

While the road to Mars is fraught with danger and complexity, the dream is alive. President Trump’s pro-space policies and Elon Musk’s engineering ambition may one day open the door for humans to set foot — and perhaps live — on another planet. Whether it happens by 2029 or 2040, the race to Mars is no longer science fiction. It’s a fast-developing reality

  1. A delusion.

Humans outside Earth’s shielding magnetic field can’t be protected from gruesomely damaging galactic radiation.

No technology to potentially do this is even on the horizon.

Can we focus on stuff to do, that can actually be done?

    1. So I should take your opinion on this subject over some of the smartest minds in the world?
