Glen Ridge NJ, in a developing story that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Principal Michael Donovan and Vice Principal Jonathan Heitmann of Ridgewood Avenue School have been placed on indefinite administrative leave following disturbing allegations of a long-term grooming case involving a former teacher.

The announcement came via a letter signed by Superintendent Kyle Arlington, issued to parents on Sunday afternoon, stating that both school leaders were removed from their positions “effective immediately.”

School Leaders Placed on Leave Following Grooming Allegations

While the district has not publicly confirmed that the administrative changes are connected to the case of Gerald White, a former Ridgewood Avenue School teacher, the timeline closely aligns with a $10 million tort claim filed by a former student who alleges years of grooming beginning when she was just 11 years old.

According to the claim, White maintained a secretive, inappropriate relationship with the student, later referred to in legal filings as “MOC” (Minor of Court). The teacher is accused of sending romantic emails, voice memos, and even requesting photos, with much of the evidence reportedly detailed in a diary discovered by another staff member.

Although the allegations include explicit digital communications and emotional manipulation, the notice does not accuse White of engaging in sexual contact with the minor.

District Cites “Safety Concerns” and Law Enforcement Protocols

The district has referenced unspecified “safety concerns” and standard protocols for reporting potential violations to law enforcement—language that mirrors previous statements made by Arlington ahead of the Board of Education’s decision to accept White’s resignation.

In light of the situation, Superintendent Arlington and Central School Principal Keisha Harris will assume temporary leadership roles at Ridgewood Avenue School, which serves grades 3 through 6.

Donovan and Heitmann are expected to remain on leave through the end of the 2024–2025 school year.

What Is a Tort Claim?

A tort claim notice, like the one filed against Glen Ridge Public Schools, is a legal warning indicating intent to pursue civil litigation if a settlement is not reached. The claim seeks $10 million in damages, asserting that multiple school staff members may have been aware of the alleged misconduct but failed to report it to authorities or the victim’s parents.

The victim’s attorney, Justin Drazin, states that journal entries reveal attempts by some employees to intervene privately, though no formal action was taken until the discovery of the diary prompted deeper scrutiny.

What Happens Next?

As Glen Ridge Public Schools grapple with the fallout, many parents are demanding greater transparency and accountability. Legal proceedings may unfold in the coming months, and investigations into administrative oversight are expected.

The district has not provided additional comments regarding ongoing internal or external investigations.

  1. More money, though taxpayers have to pay, I hope they got a good insurance company,

  2. Arrest them all. Teacher White, and the officials who who knew about it. They are supposed to be Mandatory Reporting this type of crime instead of keeping quiet. Glen Ridge: the cover up scandal ridden capital of Essex County.
