According to multiple media reports, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. is now investigating the matter. The referral accuses Cuomo of knowingly providing false testimony about a controversial July 2020 report that allegedly underreported nursing home deaths during the height of the pandemic.
Cuomo Denies Investigation and Calls It “Election Interference”
Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, responded to the news, claiming that they have not been notified of any federal investigation.
“We have never been informed of any such matter, so why would someone leak it now?” Azzopardi told the New York Times. “The answer is obvious: This is lawfare and election interference plain and simple — something President Trump and his top Department of Justice officials say they are against.”

“Mr. Cuomo provided false statements to the Select Subcommittee in what appears to be a conscious, calculated effort to insulate himself from accountability,” reads the official referral.
Cuomo Leads in NYC Mayoral Race Despite Legal Cloud
Despite the allegations, Cuomo is currently leading in the polls for the upcoming New York City mayoral primary in June. The current mayor, Eric Adams, is facing federal corruption charges and remains politically vulnerable.
Cuomo’s main challengers include progressive candidates like Zohran Mamdani, but the former governor remains the frontrunner, thanks in part to name recognition and support from centrist Democrats.
