Newark NJ, in a heart-stopping moment at Newark Liberty International Airport, a 2-year-old boy slipped onto a baggage conveyor belt and was nearly carried into the airport’s luggage screening system—but thanks to the quick response of Port Authority Police officers, a potential tragedy was averted.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Terminal A, near the JetBlue check-in counter, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
✈️ Toddler Slips onto Conveyor Belt at JetBlue Counter
The child’s mother was speaking to an airline agent when the toddler climbed onto a conveyor belt adjacent to the counter. In a matter of seconds, he disappeared into the baggage processing system, which feeds directly into the terminal’s luggage screening area.
👮♂️ Fast-Acting Port Authority Officers Save the Day
Luckily, Port Authority Police officers nearby heard the commotion and sprang into action. According to Frank Conti, president of the Port Authority Police union, the officers immediately accessed the luggage system to locate the child.
“There was a split in the belts,” Conti explained. “One officer went in one direction, and the other officer went the opposite way.” One of them quickly spotted the toddler approaching an X-ray screening unit and was able to safely remove him just in time.

The boy’s grandfather later confirmed that both the child and his mother were unharmed and had continued their journey to Tampa, Florida, where the Staten Island family was headed for vacation.
While the vacation may have been memorable, the real adventure happened before takeoff.
