New Milford NJ,  in case you missed it (we almost did, but we were distracted by sprinkles), National Donut Day rolled into town on the first Friday of June, bringing with it sweet, sugary joy — and a not-so-guilty excuse to grab a dozen glazed and call it “patriotic.”

Originally cooked up by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor the brave women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I, National Donut Day is more than just a food holiday — it’s a historical sugar rush.

But here’s the twist: There are TWO National Donut Days.
That’s right. Not one, but two opportunities each year to celebrate deep-fried doughy deliciousness. The first one lands in June. The second? November 5th. Why? No one knows. But we’re not questioning it. We’re just grabbing more napkins.

The Police and the Pastry: A Legendary Love Story

Of course, no National Donut Day is complete without acknowledging America’s most iconic duo: police officers and donuts. The association began back in the mid-20th century when cops on the night shift needed somewhere to grab coffee and a snack at 2 a.m. — and guess who was always open? Donut shops. Thus, a legendary partnership was born.

Fast forward to today, and the tradition lives on — with a smile and a chocolate glaze.

Sgt. Lafrano Brings the Glaze & Good Vibes

Right here in New Milford, Sgt. Lafrano of the New Milford Police Department leaned into the holiday with the enthusiasm of someone who definitely knows the difference between a cruller and a Boston cream.

Wishing everyone a Happy National Donut Day, Sgt. Lafrano showed that our local law enforcement knows how to keep the peace and bring the powdered sugar energy.

Donut Miss the Next One (Pun Absolutely Intended)

So, if you missed the June celebration, don’t panic — November 5 is your second chance to embrace fried dough destiny. After all, we don’t get two Thanksgivings, two Halloweens, or two National Hot Dog Days — but donuts? They get double billing.

America may be divided on politics, pineapple on pizza, and the pronunciation of “caramel,” but when it comes to donuts, we stand united. Jelly-filled, old-fashioned, cinnamon twist — they’re all welcome here.
