GLEN ROCK, NJ — The Glen Rock School District has officially named Kelly Hughes as the new principal of Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, bringing with her more than 15 years of experience in elementary education and a deep commitment to student-centered leadership.
🎓 From Westwood to Glen Rock
Hughes joins Glen Rock from the Westwood Regional School District, where she served as an elementary school principal for the past three years. Her experience also includes roles as Westwood’s Elementary Curriculum Coordinator and Instructional Specialist in Literacy.
Earlier in her career, she taught second and third grades, giving her a well-rounded perspective on classroom instruction and early childhood development.

Clear communication
-
Active listening
-
Trust-building within the school community
“When people feel informed and included, they are more empowered to collaborate and lead alongside me,” Hughes said.
🧡 Inspired by a Passion for Teaching
Hughes said her love for education stems from the influence of a special teacher in her life.
“My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Poiani, made me feel seen, loved, and cared for, while also holding me to high expectations. She showed me the power a teacher has to shape a child’s confidence and future,” Hughes shared.

“Glen Rock is a place where families, staff, and leaders work together with a shared vision to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally,” Hughes said. “I’m especially energized by the opportunity to join the Byrd School community and build on the strong, positive school culture already in place.”
