Ridgewood, NJ — Did you know August 8th is National Pickleball Day? If you missed it this year, there’s still plenty of time to grab your paddle, round up friends and family, and head to one of Bergen County’s many pickleball courts to join the fun. With sunny weather and an ever-growing community, there’s no better excuse to get out and play!
A Brief History of National Pickleball Day
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. Using a Wiffle ball, wooden paddles, and a modified badminton court, the trio created a game that blended elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton.
Fast forward to 2021, when pickleball instructor Deirdre Morris launched National Pickleball Day to raise awareness, welcome new players, and celebrate the sport’s explosive growth.
Why National Pickleball Day Matters
Pickleball’s charm lies in its simplicity, inclusivity, and low-impact play. Whether you’re a competitive athlete or someone looking for a fun, social way to stay active, pickleball offers something for everyone. It’s fast-paced enough to get your heart pumping but easy on the joints, making it accessible to all ages.
Celebrating National Pickleball Day not only highlights the sport but also fosters community bonds, encourages local court development, and inspires people to try something new.
So next August 8th, mark your calendar, grab a paddle, and celebrate the sport that’s taking America—and Bergen County—by storm!
