WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump administration announced Wednesday that it is taking over direct management of Union Station, marking another aggressive move by President Trump to assert control over the nation’s capital.

Union Station Takeover Announced

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed the shift while also unveiling the launch of new high-speed Acela trains entering service this week.

“Instead of being a point of pride, Washington’s Union Station has fallen into disrepair,” Duffy said in a statement. “By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost.”

Union Station—located just steps from the U.S. Capitol—is a critical hub for Amtrak, buses, Metro transit, and retail shops. While the Department of Transportation (DOT) has owned the station since the 1980s, management has historically been handled by other entities.

What’s Changing

The DOT is now renegotiating its agreement with Amtrak and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation to assume direct oversight. The transition is expected to be formalized in September.

Officials said the takeover will include major reinvestments in:

  • Elevators and escalators

  • Lighting and roofing

  • Security enhancements

  • General infrastructure improvements

Deputy Secretary of Transportation Steve Bradbury added, “Our nation’s capital should be putting our best foot forward. Union Station will once again be a world-class transit hub.”

A Broader Federal Crackdown in D.C.

The move comes amid a series of steps by President Trump to exert tighter federal control over Washington, D.C. His administration has:

  • Taken over the city’s police force

  • Deployed the National Guard in high-crime areas

  • Assumed authority over the Kennedy Center board

  • Proposed $2 billion in infrastructure upgrades, including streetlights, roads, and beautification projects

Earlier this month, Vice President J.D. Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and White House aide Stephen Miller joined National Guard troops stationed outside Union Station as part of the administration’s focus on reducing crime and homelessness near the transit hub.

What’s Next

The Trump administration says the Union Station overhaul will begin immediately after the management transition is finalized in September, with the goal of restoring the historic landmark into a safer, modernized, and internationally respected transit gateway.
