Tenafly NJ, just five months after his emotional homecoming, Edan Alexander, a Tenafly, New Jersey native and former Hamas hostage, has made a powerful and deeply personal announcement: he will be returning to active military service in Israel.

The 21-year-old’s decision, shared at a recent Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) dinner in Manhattan, has captured headlines and hearts around the world. After enduring 584 harrowing days in Hamas captivity, Alexander’s unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and his adopted homeland is a testament to extraordinary resilience.

“My story does not end with survival – it continues with service,” Alexander declared to a thunderous standing ovation. “Next month, God willing, I will return to Israel. I will once again put on the IDF uniform, and I will proudly serve alongside my brothers.”

A Hero’s Journey: From Tenafly to the Front Lines

Edan Alexander, a graduate of Tenafly High School, chose to volunteer with the IDF as a “lone soldier” – a term for those who serve without immediate family in Israel. On October 7, 2023, he was guarding a southern outpost near Gaza when Hamas terrorists launched their brutal attack, which left 1,200 dead and 250 taken hostage.

For 17 months, Alexander faced unspeakable horrors: he was beaten, interrogated, and held in darkness. His survival became a beacon of hope for his family and supporters worldwide. On May 12, in what Hamas called a “goodwill gesture,” Alexander was finally released, ending a nightmare that his parents said was filled with “unimaginable horrors.”

His return to New Jersey was a joyous, tearful event, with hundreds lining the streets of Tenafly to welcome him home. He also met with President Donald Trump, who Alexander credited with helping to secure his release.

More Than a Survivor: A Champion of Service

Alexander’s announcement at the FIDF’s “Salute Our Heroes” dinner was his first public speech since being freed. He spoke with a quiet strength, sharing the pain of his captivity while emphasizing a message of hope and renewed purpose.

“I fought every single day to survive in captivity, in the tunnels, in the darkness,” he said. “I want to thank President Trump and the administration for securing my release. Without their work, I would not be here with you tonight.”

But he didn’t stop there. Alexander used his platform to shine a light on those still suffering. “While I am free, many others are still in captivity,” he urged. “Their nightmare continues. Their families still wait. We cannot forget them. We cannot stop until they are all home.”

The dinner, co-chaired by FIDF board member Fred Distenfeld, served as a powerful fundraiser for the organization, with proceeds supporting the well-being of Israeli soldiers, including mental health services and support for bereaved families. Distenfeld praised Alexander’s “true bravery” and presented him with a mezuzah crafted from the remains of an Iron Dome missile interception, a symbol of protection and peace.

Alexander’s story is a powerful reminder that some heroes are not defined by their survival alone, but by their willingness to fight for a cause greater than themselves. His decision to return to the IDF is a powerful statement of loyalty, courage, and a deep-seated belief in the mission he first signed up for.
