EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — A sudden power outage struck the American Dream mall complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, causing amusement park rides to halt mid-operation and prompting emergency evacuations for visitors.
The blackout began around 3:00 p.m., leaving several areas of the massive retail and entertainment venue in darkness and stopping indoor theme park rides in their tracks.
Emergency Response and Rider Evacuations
First responders from the East Rutherford Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene to assist mall staff in safely extricating guests who were initially stuck on stranded rides. Emergency personnel treated one individual at the scene who reported difficulty breathing during the incident.
Despite the sudden disruption, social media videos captured a relatively orderly response. Visitors were seen walking through dimmed corridors, while water park guests calmly exited pool areas following staff instructions. However, large crowds gathered near guest service desks as visitors sought refunds for interrupted visits.
What Caused the American Dream Power Outage?
While early reports pointed toward a localized electrical failure, utility provider PSE&G clarified that the root cause was an internal equipment failure within American Dream’s own electrical infrastructure rather than a grid-wide issue.
In an official statement released shortly after 5:00 p.m., an American Dream spokesperson confirmed the safety measures taken:
“Due to a localized power outage, some areas of the center are currently without power. All guests were safely evacuated from park rides. We are working closely with the utility company to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.”
By 8:30 p.m., portions of the complex remained without electricity, though management stated they anticipated the venue would be fully operational the following day.
