Who Was “Kwame” Nkrumah
Tom Areton
When President Trump mentions former President Obama, he refers to Him as Barack Hussein Obama. Most Americans remember Saddam Hussein, the former President of Iraq, as a detestable strongman. He used poison against his villagers, threw gays off the roofs and executed his political opponents. His war with Iran in 1980s was bloody with many Iranians and Iraqis (including child soldiers) dying on battlefields. Barack received his Hussein middle name from his Kenyan father, Orthodox Islamist, Barack Hussein Obama Sr.
Zohran Kwame Mamdani’s middle name came from a different source. Father of Mr. Mamdani, Mahmood, an Indian national living in Uganda, gave his son a Ghanian name Kwame to celebrate Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana. Mahmood Mamdani is a college professor who believes, among other things, that Hitler got his ethnic cleansing ideas from Abraham Lincoln. What Americans did to the indigenous people of the U.S. is what Hitler did to the Jews. He infected his son Zohran with the leftist ideology he so admired in Kwame Nkrumah. Let’s take a brief look at Nkrumah to see what is actually lurking in the deep recesses of Zohran’s mind. After all, Zohran said that carrying Nkrumah’s name is a “point of pride” with him.
Kwame Nkrumah (born 1909 on Gold Coast) helped achieve independence for Ghana in 1957, the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to do so. He was educated in the U.S. at Lincoln University and U. of Pennsylvania (1935). He was a bright student and earned degrees in economics, sociology, education and philosophy. He became a leader in the anti-colonialist and Pan-African Socialist movement. When he returned to Africa (1947) he established his own Convention People’s Party. His party won the general election while he was in the British prison (1951). He became a prime minister in 1957 and (in 1960) President of Ghana. His rule became authoritarian as the economy turned sour and political opposition became active. He outlawed them (and also survived a few assassination attempts). In 1964 he declared a one-party (his party, of course) system and declared himself President for Life. He became accused of Stalinist personality cult. Immersed himself in studies of Marx and Lenin and named his philosophy Nkrumahism. Nkrumahism advocates for a system where state controls the means of production and distribution. The benefits of national wealth should be shared equally among all the people. (Those who are diligent as well as those who are lazy?) He got this idea from Marx (although Marx never indicated how this could be accomplished in reality). Exploitation by the wealthy classes shall be stopped, and classless society established. Society should be built on traditional African “communalism.” (Socialist Marxist-Leninist principles as applied to Pan-Africanism, that is shared resources, collective responsibility, community welfare first and as against individual accumulation. State control over natural resources and important industries is to prevent neo-colonialist exploitation. Only a strong united Africa can establish pure socialism. That he also distilled from Marx.) He called this a “one-party democracy” and all borders in Africa he declared artificial and the whole continent should be united. This African liberation should be integrated with the worldwide socialist revolution. (NOTE: There was no Communist Party in Ghana in 1960’s, but the philosophy of “communalism” came close to it. The government also established short-lived Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute to teach socialism and communism. It closed down after the coup.)
By the late 1960’s Ghanian economy was in deep crises… High inflation, falling GDP, no foreign exchange reserves and shortages of basic products. No wonder socialist economy started to nosedive. While Nkrumah was on a state visit to China in 1966, his government was overthrown in a military coup. He went into exile in Guinea where he became an “honorary” president. He died of cancer in 1972.
When you listen to the election speeches of Zohran Kwame Mamdani, about his plans for New York City, it is not difficult to discern the political echoes of Kwame Nkrumah’s spirit. Luckily, this is the U.S. and there will be no coup against Zohran Kwame. All New Yorkers will finally be equal in their misery.

This will be interesting…too bad Cuomo has so much baggage.
you mean murdering seniors and sexual harassment of staff ?
Sliwa is better than Cuomo.
Cuomo deserves to rot in prison.
Mamdani will win this election.
You were right! (submitted Tues. night 11/4)
Ridgewood blog, what’s the point of your screed?
Tell me about the election, not ancient history of parents naming their children.
BTW the article is so obtuse I tried reading it twice to get the point (or why) and …
do you know the expression MEGO?
My Eyes Glaze Over
Just say it out loud, I support (name someone)!
reading is fundamental
Yes, MEGO is a congenital condition, afflicting anonymous keyboard “warriors.” I loudly support Elise Stefanik for Hochul’s position … I will however enjoy watching “everything-for-free-Kwame”… (until he runs out of other people’s money, that is)
The Democrats are/were leading the push for Curtis to drop out because they want Cuomo to
win. The Gov of NY made a huge mistake backing Zohran heading into an election year
Regarding Obama Sr.: “Islamist” especially, and even “orthodox,” are both strange word choices. I suspect that by “Islamist,” you merely mean “Muslim.” He wasn’t a theocrat, which is what “Islamist” usually means. As for “Orthodox Islam:” it probably seems counterintuitive to Americans, but that term, when it’s used (which is not very often), just refers to the Sunni branch of Islam, which is the overwhelmingly larger branch, so it includes all the hundreds of millions of not-especially-religious people in places like Turkey, Indonesia, Albania, etc.
It is very disappointing that someone who has access to the Ridgewood blog uses it in this way. Had to read it twice to understand what the writer is getting at. It seems clear that the voice who wrote it is desperately using historical anecdotes and references to seek credibility. The parallels drawn, aimed at connecting how Obama & Zohran’s name came about should be irrelevant. The writer clearly has their own biases and using the terms Orthodox Islamist illustrates not only an intention to mislead the typical reader into pigeonholing but also to spread dogma ideology. We all owe it to ourselves to question what we read especially when a local community blog that doesn’t post often uses the medium to spread propaganda. No wonder schools in Ridgewood are closed today. We need to do better!

Had to comment twice??
