Ridgewood NJ, Federal health authorities have officially declared an end to the nation’s largest recorded outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on September 11 that the primary outbreak cluster tied to Mexican-grown iceberg lettuce processed by produce giant Taylor Farms has officially ended. Officials confirmed that contaminated product is no longer available in grocery stores or restaurants.
Despite the primary outbreak winding down, the scale of infections recorded over the summer remains unprecedented.

While the main lettuce-related outbreak has ended, federal and state health agencies continue to monitor the full scope of infections:

The parasite responsible, Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms—such as persistent diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps—typically contracted through contaminated food or water.
Tracking Cyclospora presents unique challenges compared to bacterial pathogens like E. coli or Listeria. Because the parasite has a long incubation period and lacks identical genetic fingerprinting tools, pinpointing exact contamination sources often requires extensive epidemiological tracking.
