Heads Up, Commuters: New Portal Bridge Work Will Force Major Rail Service Changes

Ridgewood NJ, Commuters relying on NJ Transit and Amtrak between New Jersey and New York Penn Station face significant travel disruption in early 2026. The cause? The final, complicated stage of construction on the new $2.3 billion Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack River.
NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri confirmed that a critical construction phase, known as the “cutover,” will likely require rerouting or canceling trains over an estimated period of up to six weeks.
The “Cutover”: A Massive Technical Challenge
The new Portal North Bridge is replacing the notorious, 115-year-old swing-span structure that has caused countless delays due to mechanical failure. While the main structure is nearing completion, the “cutover” is the highly complex, final technical hurdle.
This process involves integrating the brand-new railway infrastructure with the existing, operational lines. The work includes installing and testing intricate networks of:
- Tracks and Switches
- Signaling Systems
- Wiring and Communication Technology
As former Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner explained, this stage involves “interfacing the existing tracks, switches and signals with the new,” a process that will be phased to eventually allow for the full functionality of the new bridge.
What This Means for Commuters
While the exact dates and schedules are being finalized, the impact on rail service will be substantial, especially for peak-hour trains.
- Duration: The disruption could last approximately six weeks in early 2026.
- Impact: Expect significant schedule changes, including potential reroutes or cancellations, as the existing tracks will need to be partially or fully shut down for the integration work.
NJ Transit CEO Kolluri has committed to presenting the finalized schedule to the public in December, ensuring a “full and thorough vetting” with elected officials before the changes take effect.
The Timeline: On Track for Late 2026 Opening
Despite the upcoming six-week inconvenience, the project remains on schedule. The new Portal North Bridge, situated between Kearny and Secaucus, is expected to go into service in late 2026, finally ending the era of the unreliable, century-old bridge. The full project is slated for completion in 2027.
Commuters should be prepared to adjust their travel plans and look for public briefings from NJ Transit in the coming weeks.
