RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Following a tense 24 hours for local parents, the Ridgewood Police Department has officially cleared the air regarding a reported child luring attempt on Ellington Road.

After a “prompt and thorough” investigation into the December 21 incident, detectives have determined that the encounter—initially reported as a stranger offering candy to a child—was actually a non-malicious misunderstanding.

Detective Work Leads to Quick Resolution

The incident was reported at 11:37 a.m. on Sunday, when a juvenile and an alert adult reported that a male in a silver vehicle had approached the child. Thanks to the “commendable” actions of the family, who provided a detailed description of the car and the individual, Ridgewood Detectives were able to track down the driver quickly.

The Investigation Findings:

  • Identification: Detectives successfully located the vehicle and the individual in question.

  • Interviews: After interviewing all parties involved and reviewing local surveillance footage, police confirmed there was no criminal intent.

  • The Verdict: The interaction was the result of a miscommunication. The individual’s actions were non-malicious, and no laws were broken.

Chief Lyons Praises Community Vigilance

While the event turned out to be a false alarm, Police Chief Forest Lyons emphasized that the system worked exactly as it should. The rapid reporting by the family and the cooperation of neighbors provided the digital “bread crumbs” detectives needed to resolve the case.

“Chief Lyons would like to thank the many residents that cooperated with Detectives in providing video and eyewitness accounts,” the department stated in an official release. “Trust your instincts and report anything that does not feel right. This ensures the continued safety of our community.”

No Threat to Public Safety

The Ridgewood Police Department has confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. However, they continue to encourage the “See Something, Say Something” mentality that makes the Village one of the safest communities in Bergen County.

The conclusion of this case brings a sigh of relief to the Ellington Road neighborhood and the nearby school communities, proving that while vigilance is necessary, not every suspicious shadow is a threat.
