From extra late-night trains to “Buy One, Get One” deals, here is everything you need to know to navigate the system on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
👨👩👧👦 Family Win: Kids Ride Free Through January 5
If you’re traveling with the family, the SuperSaver deal is your best friend. Through 6:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026, up to two children (ages 11 and under) can ride for FREE with every fare-paying adult. No extra ticket is required for the kids—just hop on and save!
🎟️ Sleigh the Season with BOGO Deals
NJ TRANSIT is offering exclusive promo codes through their mobile app to help lower your travel costs.

🚫 The “Dry Train” Rule: Strict Beverage Ban
Before you board, take note: No beverages of any kind (including water, soda, or alcohol) are permitted on any NJ TRANSIT train, bus, or light rail vehicle starting New Year’s Eve through the early morning of January 1.

Bus Reminder: As always, beverages are never allowed on NJ TRANSIT buses, regardless of the holiday.
🕒 New Year’s Eve & Day Service at a Glance
Wednesday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve)

Rail: Modified weekday schedule. Expect extra “early getaway” trains in the late afternoon and additional evening service into New York Penn Station and Hoboken.

Bus: Most lines follow a weekday schedule, but select routes from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) will have extra outbound service between midnight and 6:00 a.m.
Thursday, January 1 (New Year’s Day)

The “Late Night” Fleet: After midnight, extra trains will depart PSNY, Hoboken, and Trenton to get revelers home.

Daytime Service: After 6:30 a.m., the entire system will shift to a Weekend/Major Holiday schedule.

Light Rail: Newark Light Rail will run on a Saturday schedule, while HBLR and River LINE will follow a Sunday/Holiday schedule.
🏈 Sports Alert: Jets vs. Patriots
Heading to the Meadowlands on Sunday, December 28? The Meadowlands Rail Line will be operating full service for the Jets vs. New England Patriots game at MetLife Stadium. Use the app to buy your “Meadowlands” ticket in advance to avoid the long lines at Secaucus Junction.
