Indifference or Incompetence? Why NJ’s First Disability Watchdog is Throwing in the Towel

Good Riddance! Paul Aronsohn Slops His Way Out of Trenton Before the Sherrill Era Can Begin

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, For the residents of Ridgewood, the name Paul Aronsohn is synonymous with the infamous “Three Amigos” era—a period defined by many as a “reign of terror” that traded Village charm for high-density urban sprawl. Now, after seven years of posturing as New Jersey’s government advocate for the disabled, Aronsohn has finally read the writing on the wall.

With Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill set to take office on January 20, 2026, Aronsohn is stepping down as the state’s first Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. It seems even he realized that an incoming administration with “half a brain” wouldn’t keep him on the payroll.

The Ridgewood Legacy: High Density and Vanishing Charm

Long before he was haunting the halls of Trenton, Aronsohn was busy dismantling the character of Ridgewood. As Mayor, he and his cohorts spearheaded the push for high-density housing and massive parking garages—changes that long-time residents say ignored public outcry and prioritized developers over the “village vibe.”

Critics have long viewed his political style as incompetent yet arrogant, a combination that left Ridgewood’s infrastructure strained and its historic identity under threat.

Seven Years of “Indifference” (Or Just Ineffectiveness?)

Since 2018, Aronsohn has held a taxpayer-funded position meant to solve the systemic failures facing New Jersey’s most vulnerable. Yet, year after year, his own mandated reports tell a story of stagnation:

  • Heartbreaking Failure: Aronsohn’s tenure has been marked by a constant stream of stories regarding abuse in group homes and families left in crisis.

  • Lack of Authority: Despite his lofty title, he admitted his powers were limited and his proposals remained largely unaddressed by the very administration that appointed him.

  • Emotional Burnout: “I’m emotionally spent,” the 59-year-old Aronsohn told reporters. It’s a sentiment shared by many New Jerseyans—though perhaps for different reasons.

The Great Escape: Jumping Before He’s Pushed

Aronsohn’s “resignation” comes at a suspiciously convenient time. In recent interviews, he noted that the 2024 annual report would likely be his last, citing the transition to the Sherrill Administration.

Political insiders suggest Aronsohn isn’t leaving because the work is done; he’s leaving because a new governor looking for actual results wouldn’t tolerate his brand of “mean-spirited” incompetence. By resigning now, he avoids the ignominy of being handed a pink slip on Inauguration Day.

What’s Next for the “First Ombudsman”?

As Aronsohn prepares to pack up his Trenton office, the question remains: where will he land next?

“May he become a janitor in a halfway house with his big ‘caring’ heart. And a slop bucket to keep him company.”

For those who watched him ignore the pleas of Ridgewood residents during his time in local office, the hope is simple: that he stays far away from Village business and finds a role where his “skills” can finally match his output.
