A 12-Foot “Snow Mountain” is Threatening This Ridgewood Neighborhood

Is Valley Hospital Dumping 270,000 Gallons of Contaminated Runoff Onto Ridgewood Families ?

Ridgewood NJ, a David-vs-Goliath environmental battle is brewing in the heart of Ridgewood (07450). Residents living near the commercial property at 555 N. Maple—directly across from the former Valley Hospital site—are sounding the alarm over a massive “snow mountain” that threatens to turn their backyards into a toxic drainage basin.

The property, owned by Valley Hospital, is currently home to an estimated 360,000 cubic feet of snow. Piled 12 feet high across a 30,000-square-foot asphalt lot, the mound sits directly adjacent to family homes and uphill from the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook.

The Dangerous Math of the Melt

For the families on North Maple and surrounding streets, this isn’t just a pile of snow—it’s a looming environmental disaster.

  • The Volume: When this pile melts, it will release approximately 270,000 gallons of water. That is the equivalent of 27 backyard swimming pools worth of liquid.

  • The Surface: The lot is paved with non-porous asphalt, meaning the water has nowhere to go but down.

  • The Path: Directly next door are unpaved residential yards that act like sponges. Every drop of runoff is destined for family play areas and the storm drain system.

  • The Contaminants: This isn’t “clean” snow. The runoff will carry road salt, sand, motor oil, and automotive chemicals gathered from the hospital’s commercial operations.

A Neighborhood Haunted by History

This isn’t the first time this specific lot has threatened the health of Ridgewood residents. The property at 555 N. Maple was previously a car dealership that left a legacy of environmental contamination.

Among those currently in the “flood path” are:

  • Elderly residents in their 80s who have lived there for 30 years and already survived the cleanup of the previous dealership.

  • A young family with a newborn baby who just moved into their first home.

  • Young children whose primary play area sits directly in the drainage path.

  • A mother of three who has spent a lifetime maintaining her property, only to watch it face a new threat from a healthcare institution.

“The irony is devastating: A hospital is supposed to protect public health, not threaten it. Valley Hospital is treating neighboring families as their drainage system.”Affected Resident

The Legal and Ethical Standpoint

Under New Jersey case law (Armstrong v. Francis Corp.), property owners are held to a standard of “reasonable use” regarding surface water drainage. Dumping massive quantities of snow in a way that causes predictable damage to neighboring land can establish clear liability.

Despite formal notifications sent to the Village of Ridgewood, Valley Hospital Property Management, the NJ DEP, and Bergen County Environmental Health, residents claim no action has been taken to haul the snow off-site.

How to Help or Get Involved

The community is calling for Valley Hospital to act as a responsible neighbor by removing the snow before the next warm front triggers a catastrophic melt.

  1. Does the village still dump snow at graydon parking lot?

  2. The village dumped snow onto the Schedler property years ago along with free soil from other hazardous sites, now they want kiddies to play there.

Vagianos, Perron, Weitz, Winograd, Village manager Keith Kazmark spending millions of tax dollars to clean this toxic dumping ground up and residents will PAY dearly!

  3. OK, so where is the village dumping the snow from their business section this year we know in the past they used to go to the pool lot.

  4. If the village is not dumping snow at great and poor lot, where are they bringing it. We do know in the past that the state water commission stopped the village from dumping into the Brook because of the salt. We think it’s time for the village to invest in a snow melting machine then they can melt the snow at multiple locations throughout the town and have a drain right into the sanitary no problems done. It’s time to get with the times maybe just maybe the village can purchase one through shared services, I’m sure multiple towns would love to utilize that just saying.

  5. I don’t see a big deal here. Any snow on the streets will melt and the same contaminants (or more) will end up in the storm drains. That brook is downstream from the sewer plant in waldwick, and it could be beneficial to dilute the sewage emitted into the brook. Sewer plant get rid of natural fecal matter, but doubt they can get rid of antibiotic and virus residue

  6. Think back to your calculus class….snow melt will depend and temperatures which, presumably, for the next few weeks will remain low hence slow melting. Would this snow not melt if it remained in Valley’s parking lot? And with respect to contaminants, they would also eventually find their way into runoff be it snow or rain.

I’d be more concerned about the amount of fertilizer your neighbors are using on their lawns.

This is the stupidest post ever.

    1. I wonder who made that change?

  8. Going to melt wether concentrated or not and go to the same place. The priority needs to be on the growing number of traffic accidents, speeding and pedestrian safety.

  9. Don’t worry, Audrey is friends with Peewee…

  10. Just go and purchase a snow melting machine already with a few of the towns that’s the smartest way of doing own business.

  11. Big change is coming,

  12. I thought Valley sold this property right after they decided to build the new hospital in Paramus. Can someone clarify if this property indeed continues to be a Valley property?
