Is Ridgewood on the verge of a parking revolution or a taxpayer nightmare?
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, on Tuesday, February 3rd, Village Hall transformed into a battleground of ideas as the community gathered for the Community Forum on Downtown Parking. While the official invite promised a “comprehensive look” at the Central Business District (CBD), many residents are smelling a rat—specifically one involving rising debt and potential conflicts of interest.
In 2021, During a meeting of the CBDAC, then Candidate Vagianos offered his opinion of the current Village Council’s proposal to construct a new park at a Franklin Avenue property now occupied by a long-ago abandoned auto repair shop. Of the proposed park, Vagianos said this: “Putting a park there in that space is such a terrible use of that space. Pave over it and put parking meters there.”
The Official Pitch: A “Modernized” Downtown
The Village brought in Walker Consultants, a specialized firm tasked with auditing how Ridgewood handles its cars. According to the Village, the goal is to overhaul:
-
Parking Policies: Evaluating current time limits and zones.
-
Rate Structures: Are we paying too much (or too little) for curb space?
-
Technology: Upgrading kiosks, signage, and permit purchasing systems.
The Village insists that whether you’re a daily commuter or an occasional shopper, your feedback is the “foundation” for long-term solutions.
The Controversy: Pretext for a Parking Pedestal?
While the forum was presented as a neutral fact-finding mission, local critics aren’t buying it. Skepticism is mounting that these studies are merely a pretext for building another massive parking garage.
The stakes are high—and expensive. Critics point to three major red flags:
-
The $100 Million Debt Ceiling: Opponents argue that green-lighting another major capital project will push Ridgewood’s debt past the $100M mark, putting a massive strain on future taxpayers.
-
Conflict of Interest? Rumors are swirling regarding the location of the proposed garage. Allegations have surfaced that the planned site sits on the same block where the Mayor owns private property, raising questions about who really benefits from increased downtown capacity.
-
The “Borrowing” Breaking Point: For many, the “Village charm” of Ridgewood is being traded for concrete structures and endless interest payments.
“At some point, the residents should wake up and say ‘enough’ to the borrowing!” — Local Resident sentiment at the forum.
What’s Next for Ridgewood?
Whether you see a parking garage as a necessary utility for a thriving CBD or a “boondoggle” designed to enrich the few, one thing is certain: the conversation is just beginning.
If the Village moves forward based on the Walker Consultants’ findings, the financial landscape of Ridgewood could change forever. It’s time for residents to look past the “signage and kiosks” and look closely at the bottom line.

Everyone stop wasting your time and effort. Because the politicians and the people behind the curtain are going to push you for this..
Wasn’t fooled the first time around…
At the core….this Council is a Democrat Party Machine, including the Village Manager.
Sooner or later the voters that put these clowns in office are going to get it good and hard.
This town is a bunch of cry babies
They’re going to spend a real dollar they can get, and in the end, they will say look what we accomplished. Yes they have many many improvements. But the taxpayers going to pay for it.
I was at the meeting last night.
I didn’t hear anything that would lead anyone to believe that a new parking garage is on the agenda. In fact, it was clearly stated that we are paying off debt on the existing garage and paid parking all over the village is down. Paid parking needs to increase so that we can continue to pay down the debt without raising taxes.
Start charging for parking on Saturday night after six and also start charging for parking on Sunday once the performance art center opens up.
Follow the money. Mayor owns properties on that block!
While the garage may only cost 20M USD, the bigger plan of referrendum is brewing at BOE which is planning a HUGE referendum!! Pay attention there.
I don’t think you know what ‘referendum’ means.
Let me ask Scarf Lady if she knows what’s going on.
and where is that 4 million given to health barn with the mayor and restaurant owner standing right there to collect? where is all that money?
It’s all another bullshit story. The left side of their face doesn’t know the right hand side is going to say.,, This is getting good.
