Moonachie NJ, A massive emergency response unfolded in Moonachie, NJ, today as firefighters from across Bergen County battled a stubborn commercial structure fire at 1 State Street. What began as a routine water flow alarm quickly escalated into a multi-alarm operation involving more than a dozen local departments.
The Initial Call: From Alarm to “Heavy Smoke”
At 17:01 hrs, the Moonachie Fire Department was dispatched to the commercial address for a reported water flow alarm. However, the situation turned critical within minutes.
The first arriving police officer reported heavy smoke billowing from the building, prompting the MFD Chief to immediately transmit a second alarm. This call brought an immediate surge of mutual aid units to the scene to combat what was clearly a developing inferno.
Inside the Attack: Fighting Fire in Foam Products
The fire was located within a warehouse containing foam products, a material known for creating high-heat conditions and dense, toxic smoke. Fire companies acted swiftly, executing a two-pronged strategy:
-
Feeding the Sprinkler System: Ensuring the building’s internal defenses had maximum water pressure.
-
Aggressive Interior Attack: Crews stretched multiple handlines into the warehouse to knock down the main body of the fire amidst the stored foam inventory.
As the intensity grew, additional alarms were transmitted to bring in fresh crews for the grueling tasks of ventilation and overhaul.
A Massive Mutual Aid Effort
Bergen County’s mutual aid system was on full display as departments from the surrounding area rushed to assist. Around 5:00 PM, Hasbrouck Heights (Chiefs 61, 62, and Engine 2) joined a long list of operating units.
Departments on the Scene Included:
-

-
Hasbrouck Heights FD

Little Ferry FD
-
Wood-Ridge FD
-
Hackensack FD

Paramus FD
-
Wallington FD
-

-
Ridgefield Park FD
-
And several other regional units.
Moonachie EMS and DPW were also instrumental, providing on-scene rehabilitation for firefighters and logistical support.
Overhaul: Forklifts and Hot Spots
Once the main fire was “knocked down,” the work was far from over. Because foam products can retain heat and reignite, firefighters utilized forklifts to move large quantities of product around the warehouse, ensuring every hot spot was fully extinguished.
Crews rotated through a designated rehab station to recover from the physical toll of the interior attack and heavy smoke conditions.
Status and Investigation
The cause of the fire at 1 State Street is currently under investigation. Thanks to the rapid second-alarm transmission and the seamless coordination between North Jersey fire departments, the blaze was contained before it could consume the entire structure.
